1954 Mercury Monterey Hardtop

Recommended Posts

While light blue might not be my first choice on a new car, it definitely works on this '54 Mercury Monterey. It was Mercury's top-of-the-line hardtop for 1954, and received a frame-off restoration about 15 years ago. Both the exterior colors and interior are as they were when new according to the door tag.

Bodywork was done to a very good standard, and still looks good today, although there is some minor bubbling at the very bottom edge of the driver's door. Otherwise, this appears to be a very solid car with no previous rust or damage repairs. Even the trunk floor is unmolested factory sheetmetal. Someone spent a ton of money restoring the chrome, which is excellent throughout with no pitting or peeling, and all the stainless has been polished.

Inside, the interior was done to original specifications, and it does match--the difference between the door panel and seat upholstery colors is purely due to my camera and the ambient lighting. There are no rips or tears, and all the gauges are 100% functional. In fact, EVERYTHING works, including the clock and radio, which has an FM converter inside the original housing.

The engine is a 256 cubic inch OHV V8 that was fully rebuilt at the time of restoration, as was the 3-speed Merc-O-Matic automatic transmission. It starts quicker than my fuel injected modern car, and runs extremely well. The original "teapot" carburetor has been replaced with a modern 4-barrel Holley, and power brakes with a dual master cylinder have been added for safety. The owner reports that it runs effortlessly at 70 MPH and has never overheated, even in traffic.

An unusual '50s hardtop with a lot of character and in a wonderful color combination. Drive and enjoy.

Asking $29,900 and we're always negotiable.
