53 Buick Vin Tag Location

Trying to find out where the original Vin Tag was located on a 53 Buick Special 2dr Sedan, Model 48D ? :confused:

Below the windshield pillar post, between the two hinges of the front door, as you are looking into the front fender.

On which side ? I have a tag on side of firewall in front of passenger side hood hinge but that has body style, trim etc but no serial #, I cant see anything any where else,is where your saying it is between the 2 door hinges as you look in from inside of hood & on which side ?

Sit in the car on the driver's seat. Open the door. Look between the two hinges, on the pillar below the windshield--not on the door, as if you were peering into the back of the fender. There is a cover plate between the two hinges, and the VIN plate attaches there, at an angle.

Yes nothing there, apparantly gone,but at least I know where it was suppose to be.

Forgot to ask were they rivited on or welded, its hard to tell from pic ?

I would imagine there would be two holes in that location...where they are riveted

As for material I think it may be brass?

As for making one yourself, are there not some legalities that one should go through?

Depending on where you live (and register the car), the state may issue a new VIN. Your best bet is to discuss with your DMV.

On my '53 Super Convertible the number is stamped on top of the drivers side frame rail near the frame horn. You may have to remove the fender and/or radiator to find it. The manual says that it is on top of the frame rail near the starter. That did not prove to be correct on my car. This number matches the number that should be on the drivers door post as mentioned in previous posts.
