cooter9
Kind of dumb but I'm still new to these 6 volt cars. But do I disconnect the big heavy cable looking thing from battery first to make it dead and no power getting to the car?Thank you
mrpushbutton
Either cable will disconnect the power.
Owen_Dyneto
Mr. Pushbutton, as always, has provided an accurate answer, disconnecting either cable will leave the electrical system powerless. But let me just add that it's prudent to remove the ground cable first, or if only removing one cable, to remove the ground. This is the cable that connects to the engine block, and NOT the one that goes to the starter motor or solenoid. The reason is thus; if you decide to remove the "hot" (not the ground) cable first, and your wrench happens to touch the battery hold down, or the fender or any other part of the car body, you'll have a direct short circuit and a lot of excitement, and possibly a very dangerous situation. Makes no difference if your car is 6 volt, 12 volt, or anything volt.
tbirdman
Also let me add your car may have positive ground so that's the ground is the wire going to the plus terminal of the battery.
cooter9
so I just disconnect the heavy braided looking cable first?
Guest Albert
Yes. it should be going to the block...
cooter9
also, if you disconnect for little while from a good working 6 volt system does it drain the generator or anything? When you hook back up are you ready to just fire up the engine?
Clipper47
Disconnecting the battery won't harm anything and it all should work when you hook it back up unless, depending upon battery condition, the battery needs a charging .
34PackardRoadsta
Also, don't try and disconnect the battery while the car is running; you will damage the gen
