  1. If someone offered me this car for free with the understanding that I had to restore it I would turn it down in a minute but then I have been there myself.   Trying not to be negative but this is a money pit and not a valuable car when finished.  On the other hand if you have a lot of free time on your hands and wish to try your luck at restoration offer them a thousand.  Several years ago a friend purchased a 32 Packard coupe in this condition and restored it to a AACA first prize.  He then sold it for $50K less than he had in it.  When I was young I thought my time was free.  As I look back I wish I had spent more time with family and less on my hobbies

  2. Bill I appreciate you desire to fulfill the wish of your late friend but there is something you haven't mentioned and that is the wife ASKING you to assist her in the disposal of the collection.  Until that happens I would do nothing.  The husbands wishes may be a moot point especially if she had no personal interest in the collection.

There's a lot to do if you're the go-to guy the family wants to handle the disposition of the cars

If you have been appointed the "go to guy" i would ask for a written agreement laying out what your function and responsibilities are.  Are you willing to do this on your dime or do you expect to have your direct expenses paid out of the proceeds.  Actually in your last paragraph you describe conditions that preclude you from being the "go to" guy other than assisting from afar.  Having been involved in helping settle the estate of a dear friend (AACA past president} my advice would be to stay on the bench until asked to get in the game.  Estate's bring out the worst in people.  Just my TCW

mostly from the late Dee Howard

If my memory is correct at one time Dee owned one of the four prototype Duesenberg V-16 aircraft motors developed around 1916-1918.  Dee was an important innovator in the business jet industry and invented and developed the thrust reverser used to slow down jet aircraft during landing.  Early business jets used drag chutes for emergency landings.  Bill Lear was one of his earliest employees and the original mock up of the Lear Jet was produced by Dee Howard. He also had an extensive car collection in San Antonio.  So much for trivia!!

  4. If this is a tour car I wouldn't worry about the heads much.  I have been touring with my 41 for years and have never been asked to look under the hood.  If it will fit your 37 you may wish to use a rear end from a 41 automatic.  Runs much nicer at highway speeds.  I may have a extra V-16 fan lying around.  If you are interested I will check.

  5. I have probably towed over 250K miles and never owned  a new trailer.  Just be patient and take your time.  Have your requirements ahead of time and don't compromise.  You can't believe how shoddy some trailer construction is.  I once looked at a trailer where the tie down brackets were attached to the 1/2 inch plywood floor with wood screws.  I for one don't believe the premium for aluminum is worth it unless you tow vehicle is light duty or you plan on towing frequently. On a 24 ft enclosed trailer I doubt you are reducing the weight by 800# or less.  Your diesel tow vehicle with 800 to 1000 pounds of torque doesn't know the difference.  If you buy used plan on rebuilding the brakes, packing the bearings and new tires.  As an example I paid $9000.00 for my 48 ft gooseneck tri axle in 2009.  It was built in 2005.  Also plan on installing a wench and get the 10-12K model.  Remember that a wench only pulls it's stated load on the first row of winding.  My TCW, others will have different experiences.

Sorry, I thought you were looking to buy, not sell

    Robert,

I've always like the 400SC, but kind of moved away from purchasing one because of it's low stance. It gets harder and harder to get out of some of my cars as I've aged. At 76 yrs old I began to wonder how long I could comfortably use one.

As for as your search, what are your specific requirements? What does low mileage mean to you? Do you have a price ceiling, or is the original condition more important then the price? Is color a concern to you? The reason I ask is the cars are available where I live, but my guess that you wouldn't want buy one from the West Coast-or you would have already bought one.

Yesterday I purchased a SC 300 with 38K miles.  Owned by a sports car racer (Toyota Supra) who put 10 K miles on it in the past 10 years and recently changed the timing belt.   Pearle White with Auto.  I was hoping for a 5 speed but the wife vetoed it since she wants to drive it in nice weather.  Thanks for the offer to help.

  7. I was mentioning this to my morning coffee group today.  A friend remarked that his Lincoln in going off lease in a couple of months and and he is getting private offers to take over the lease so the new leesor can purchase it at termination.  Apparently the buy out price is predetermined  and much lower than current value.
