  1. PIcking up this old thread, I went to a local show today.  Consistent with the theme of the the thread, about half of the cars were new.  There's some significant wealth around here, so there were a bunch of Lambos, Ferraris, etc. My '34 Packard was the only non-Ford pre-war car.

A few photos, for those interested:

My favorites were probably these two Model Ts, driven by two older gentlemen.  The guy who has the '15 bought it in 1968; the guy who has the '14 bought it in 1975.  They caravaned together the show.  Gotta love the horseless carriage club crowd.

There was a very nice pair of '58 Edsels.  You don't see the top-of-the-line Citation convertible often.

We are very lucky to have this amazing car in our building now!  Thanks to Dwight Schaubach for putting it on display.  Looks fabulous here and we will keep it as long as he is willing to share it with all of us.  I'll post a little history later.

Spectacular.  Talk about looking forward to going to the office every day....

  3. TGVest, based on what you have said, the 560SL seems like a great choice.  The key, I think, is that this is going to be your first vintage car.  For your first car, it's better to start with a car that is widely available, less expensive, and that lots of shops can work on.  The 560SL is more conservative and common than others on your list, but that's okay for your first vintage car.   Get that, have fun with it, and then, if you enjoy that experience, maybe next time try something more exotic and rare.

  4. My tastes run to cars that you're unlikely to find locally, so I usually go to look at cars a plane-flight away -- I can think of 4 flights about 1/2 way off the country but I would guess there are more that were unsuccessful and I forgot about.  Once in a while you luck out and there's something local.  That happened to me once when I was the newsletter editor of the local Packard Club chapter and a member e-mailed me to place an ad selling his car.  I ended up buying the car before the newsletter went out. :)

Only I’d you could fit 525 cars in it. San Morino is like Palm Beach……….so the answer is no, not his yard.

Lacy Park. Great place to teach a kid to ride a bicycle.  Oh, and have a great car show, too.

    20 minute mark?

  6. I'm probably going to sell  the '49 Cadillac convertible soon that I bought 20 years ago and that I have really loved.  Fantastic car, but I don't have the garage space anymore and it's too far away now to drive regularly.  So probably time to let it go.  But after I sell it, I'm sure it will be the one that I let get away!

Update: Grimy…….aka Uncle George and his better half stopped by the house Saturday night for a modest party that AJ and I tossed. Lots of car people showed up……….and someone consumed the bottle of Makers Mark while I wasn’t looking. Of course, it was a special acquisition just for George. I wiped out a bottle of Crown. We were feeling no pain by the time things wound down………Orin, post the photo of the running boards out front.

Here it is.  I mean, no party is complete without the ceremonial transfer of the running boards that have been kept for 62 years.

Are there any more shots of this one? Excellent story, I'd love to see a nice profile pic.

I was told a special client in Terre Haute, IN had the car commissioned thru Packard and their Terra Haute dealer to come up with a speedster on a Twin Six chassis. Anyone?

There was a lot of discussion about this car.  I didn't get the full story -- from what I heard, the dealer, with Packard's okay, was trying out different features from different years -- but I found the overall result very pretty although a little bit weird.  For example, it was a Super Eight that had Twin Six hubcaps; even if it was factory authorized, it's a little confusing for my rigid Packard brain.

Here are two more pictures, although I'm not sure they add much.

Thank you to everyone who posted pictures.  That is a most impressive collection of automobiles.

I do have to ask, what is the one that appears to have a radial engine in the rear!

Here's a picture I took of the radial engine in the Julian.  Pretty wild stuff.

This has to be the worst car show I've ever seen.

How can these guys expect to stay in business? Not ONE Mustang or Camaro. Disgraceful.

And a lot of the cars are so bad that the makers went out of business.

I love that '46 coupe.  Seems a great deal at that price for a collector who is open to closed car.
