  1. Mr Corbin (Dave if a may),

I see that you are frequently helping folks with their ID tag and serial number questions. So I wanted to ask.

I have a 38 80C (not that you couldn't tell by my login name)

    ID tag is as follows

    1938 Mod. 80C

    Style No. 38-4849

    Body No. 81

    Trim No. 476 9

    Paint No. 519 -6W

I have all the decoding for this, so that is not my question. My question is Botticelli Blue with green leather interior and a blue-grey top??? That seems to me such a weird color combination. Any idea how many may have been made that way?

I am currently undertaking a frame off restoration of the car doing most of the work myself. I am definitely painting the car Botticelli blue (gorgeous color) and I am fairly certain I am going to do red leather interior and a tan top with Dante Red wheels. That would seem a more mainline color combination and certainly wouldn't get questioning by an AACA judge (A BCA judge I trust would know better).

Anyway just curious. Thanks in advance.

    Brian

  2. In my experience some can be easy but some require a little more effort. None were particularly hard, but I suppose if they are pretty rusty or worn they could be. I had hinges completely removed from the door and body and then plased it on top of my slightly open vise. I used a center punch and hammer on the bottom to tap out the pin. I think I put some lube in the lubrication hole before I started as I remember.

Note that the body to hinge tolerance is very close and if you attempt to get pin out with the hinge still attached to the car if the hinge moves it could krinkle the body.

  3. Dear 331,

Ok I'm glad you mentioned you live in NC. In the state of North Carolina you can register for a Transporter Licesnce plate. You are allowed to do this because by owning an antique vehicle you are "considered in the business of collecting automobiles".

    Please see the form http://www.ncdot.org/dmv/forms/vehicleregistration/download/MVR16AA.pdf

This allows you to put this plate on ANY historic vehicle. No where does it state the vehicle has to be titled in the state of North Carolina.

So it's not exactly the answer you were looking for, but you can leave the car titled in TX and still have an NC plate. Also NC is a real pain to get a car titled in regardless becasue they have to do an inspection of the vehicle to verify it isn't modified, so save yourself the headache.

As for your seriel number there is one other location you may be able to look but it will be very difficult to get to for you. On my 1938-80C when I removed the body from the chassis I found on the right rear frame rail the serial number had been stamped into the frame not attached on a spereate tag like the picture from grandpa above. So again on the top of the passenger side frame rail about 18" from the rear most part of the frame was the sereial number. You may be able to do a rubbing of the frame without removing the body.

    best of luck!!

  4. To expand on suchan's comment just in case it is not clear; the retaining screw is accessed through a small hole in the side of the door (the parts the mates to the door jam). Sometimes you have to slightly push the handle down to have full access to the screw. It is a flat head screw and less than an 1/8" wide so a very small but long screwdriver is needed.

  5. Thank Jeff. To clarify I am looking for the length of the Chrome piece which runs between the hoof leaf and slides over the piece riveted to each hood. As you mention it runs from the cowl to the nose (back of hood ornament).

    So 51" for series 40

Can anybody help with Series 60 and 80/90?

    Thanks.
