Pete, I suspect that I may be the inspiration for your request, having written to you recently when I was seriously considering buying a low mileage '85 Riviera, and wondered if there had been any articles in The Bugle. Your comments were helpful, and I have the car in the barn - dreaming of the day when snow, salt, and mud will be gone from Vermont roads. I will enjoy getting to know my new car, a far different animal from my '55 Super, but in some ways a clear descendant.

So, after a week of bleeding lines, adjusting brakes, and head scratching on my mechanic's part, the problem has not reappeared to date. The brakes seem normal, except that occasionally when applying them there is what I would describe as strong pushback in the pedal. It's anticlamactic, I know, but I wanted bring everyone up to date. Many thanks for the suggestions, and I will report any change in situation going forward. I try to anticipate stops anyway in this car, and will continue to drive carefully.

John D and Tom, the problem at the moment is not that the brakes are sticking, it's that the brakes start to apply as normal and then the brake pedal suddenly drops to near the floor. My mechanic does not feel that the flex lines would cause this problem. We're on hiatus through the weekend; he says he has a couple ideas to try Monday. I have relayed the ideas in posts 2 and 3 to him as well, and will keep you posted. Thanks for your efforts.

I recently took my '55 Super to my mechanic because one or both of the front brakes wasn't fully releasing and I could smell burning brakes. The brakes worked fine other than that. After he put in new front wheel cylinders and bled the lines, I found that from time to time when I applied the brakes they would work as usual, but suddenly the pedal dropped a couple inches. There was still enough room left to work the brakes, but it certainly was disconcerting. The car is back with the mechanic, who's been working on old cars for the past thirty years or more. He's made sure there isn't air in the lines, adjusted all four brakes, but the pedal issue is still there and he doesn't know what to make of it. Is it the power brake booster? The master cylinder?

To All Vermont Antique Car Fans, I am writing to ask your support of Vermont House Bill 40, which would permit registering antique cars with license plates from the year of a car's manufacture. Back in January, with help from my state representative, House Bill 40 was drafted and sent to the House Transportation Committee in February. While to me this bill makes perfect sense - it would bring Vermont into line with the practice of surrounding states for antique cars, could be a source of added revenue, and would delight owners of antique cars - it's competing with other bills which are much more pressing. Unfortunately, the bill may never leave the Transportation Committee without a show of support. The best way to get House Bill 40 reviewed by the Transportation Committee and sent to the House and Senate for their consideration is for Vermonters to register their support of the bill with their state representatives. The time to do this is now - in the next week - while agendas are being prepared for the 2012 session. Notes should be brief (!) and express the writer's own feelings about the value of having period plates. I suggest sending the note to your "Vermont House representative, with copies to your state Senators and to the Chair of the House Transportation Committee (Patrick Brennan, at pbrennan@leg.state.vt.us). To find the names and e-mail addresses of your Vermont House and Senate reps, go to: Vermont Legislature With a few minutes time from a lot of folks, we can do this.

thanks John for the suggestion about posting this topic on the AACA forum; I'll give it a try. I've also submitted the subject to Dan Strohl who manages the Hemmings Blog, hoping he will give it a boost. If enough people voice their feelings to the Vermont House, the next step is likely to be a hearing in the Transportation Committee and I will likely be called as a witness. It would be helpful to have an idea of how many folks have written to them, so would those of you who do please comment on this thread? A minor note - I used to have my BCA number and cars listed after my signature, but they are gone now and I can't seem to find a way to put them back. Any suggestions?

John D., It's been many years, but back inthe 70's I had a '48 Super sedanette. The owner (a Buick mechanic) included a GM kit for a rear wiper, still in the box. Since it required cutting a hole in the sheet metal, I never got to installing it.

I'm grateful for all the suggestions, and will proceed to educate myself some more on the options. Wouldn't you think that GM would be more supportive of the hobby and make replacement batteries - at least for those years where they sold so many cars, like '55 and '56? Then there's Sears, which has batteries for old cars, but in the case of '55/'56 Buicks, is making the wrong size! John

It's time to replace the battery in my '55 Super, and I've decided it's not worth it to me to spend the premium for a reproduction. However, neither Hemmings nor The Bugle seem to have advertisements for a modern maintenance free battery. The parts manager at my local Buick dealer tried for two weeks, but came up empty on getting one from Delco. I drove about 45 miles to Sears today and lugged a Die-Hard home, only to find that it's about a half inch too wide, and an inch to short. The salesman insists that's what should fit, and indeed it fits into the battery pan, but is too wide for the holddown bracket. So where else can I find a decent, long lasting replacement battery?

MTX5467 - thanks for your detailed reply. Sorry for any confusion in my posting, where twisted fingers typed 1968 instead of 1986. Since I own a 1955 GM low mileage car, I am trying to figure out what to do. As I understand it from your note, I could either use a zinc additive, or I could make sure of using the older SL rated oil. Or, perhaps since I have an untouched original engine, I shouldn't lose a lot of sleep over this issue. Does that sum it up correctly? John '55 Super Riviera

The Nuts & Bolts column in the April 2007 Buick Bugle mentions that current SM grades of motor oil don't include zinc, which supposedly is needed for Buick engines prior to 1968. There is a GM engine supplement, part #1052367, which costs about $8 a pint, and can be added at each oil change. This topic started in the Bugle last fall, and I've checked the forum entries back to that time, but haven't seen this mentioned. So, sorry if this has been discussed recently, but can anyone confirm? John '55 Super Riviera
