  1. Well.... Finally was able to figure out how to re-size pictures that seem to work on my system (and for my technically challenged mine).

This is what I purchased for my good Limited.

After a good bit of elbow grease with some metal polish, here is what they came out like.

    AANNNDDD.......

This is what the sky looked like just after I got home right after that limb fell down! That system followed me home from South Bend and had I left an hour latter, would have been on the freeway when it hit. Fortunately no one was hurt in that storm but it took the hydro out in some areas for about two hours.

Still worth the trip and enjoyed meeting great Buick People!

As several of you know, Laurel received a Silver award yesterday. I'm very pleased with that. I was hoping for a Silver, but wasn't expecting it. I know I have lots of work to do before I have it judged again.

Thanks to everyone who came to visit me/Laurel! I met lots of new folks, and put familiar names to faces...thanks to this forum.

I am still blown away by how many B-58's were there.

    Ditto on the CONGRATULATIONS Adam!

It was good to meet you in person and yes, you should be proud of Laurel. If I could just figure how to post my video of you driving into the lot, it would show the huge smile on your face on Friday before you received your award.

  3. Taking a moment to say that I went to the National in South Bend on the Friday for the day to meet who I could from the Forums and scout out the swap meet. After a 3:30am departure, hot day on the tarmac, talking to many (Thanks gang for the support), I did find something for my other Limited that will be the subject of this thread when I am done with my parts car. (Need to keep the wife happy here)

Oh ya, sat on the Detroit/Windsor Bridge about 8:30pm and watched as a severe weather front moved in. Nothing like being dead stopped in traffic, high up out in the open over water watching a black & green sky approaching! Customs must have got the word as after two questions, handed me the Passport and said "Have a nice evening". Just got home and.... had I parked the truck 10 feet out in the driveway.... the hood would have been changed from the 5 inch limb that came from my neighbour's tree!

Pictures to come after I re-size them.

  4. Robert,

Thanks for taking the time to post this information!

Now that I have my computer back up & running, will take the time I need tonight and give it the old college try (I'm somewhat of a visual learner...).

After asking you about resizing your pictuers originally, we had a bad storm hit and even though I have my equipment on a battery back-up/surge protection unit, it blew the power supply in the computer after a REALLY close lightning strike! At first I though it was totally fried and would lose everything! Fortunately that was not the case but my "I T" guy was away with family obligations. Did find out that my Windows Vista 32 bit system will soon be obsolete in about 9 months to a year.....

Here I go, just when I start to get comfortable using it, now another change!

(definately showing my age I guess...)

    Many thanks again.

  5. My Wife and I returned home safely late last night. We had an amazing time and met a lot of great folks. Not to mention seeing all of the awesome cars. I'm in the process of organizing and re-sizing the ton of pictures I took at the meet and all of the museums.

    Robert & Mrs Shadetree,

Sorry I did not get to meet you both but I only was able to come on Friday (without my car no less) so moved around through the swap meet (with some success!) and talking to as many as I could in that all too short a time. Glad your travels went uneventfully and enjoyed the Meet, I know I enjoyed myself.

Any chance you could talk me through the picture resizing that you say you did? I know it has been discussed on the Forums somewhere before but can't seem to locate it. If it's better served you could PM me..... my new digital has a much bigger file than my old one and cropping (which I was able to do before) won't allow me to get them to a size for posting. Thanks for any help or direction. I have a few that I would like to post on my thread and right now not having any luck.

  6. I was 50 miles short of South Bend when this happened. I made it to the showfield, and will be replacing it in the morning.

    HOLY, HOLY!

That is some shake down cruise! I'll just bet you were sweating!

Hopefully you have access to some shade or a garage to get out of today's heat.

I'm leaving early Friday (4am) to spend the day and looking forward to meeting you '58 owners.

    Good luck Adam today.

  7. Yesterday while working in the yard I look up to see this cream coloured car parking across the street. My curiosity is peaked and wander over. It appeared all stock and after a while the fellow came back and started to discuss his car. What I learned was it is powered by a 4 cylinder engine but... a slant 4! I was sure Pontiac used a 6 and possibly a V6 like the Buick Special did that year but a slant 4? Anyone familiar with this?

It sure did not look modified in any way and why would anyone go a four cylinder anyway? Even the rear end was not the usual differential. This has to be something rare right?

  8. Wow! A shorted out coil you say? Interesting.

Back in the day when I was running my Special in High School, tried to start her and suddenly it just quit during cranking, nothing. By the time I went under the hood there was plenty of smoke everywhere and in panic mode never thought to take off the battery cable. Banged on a door to ask someone to PLEASE call the fire department and I heard the car trying to start on its own! Something had indeed shorted and the whole under the hood harness was toast! Maybe that coil?

Fortunately, there were no gas leaks and the car never burned but.... that was my everyday wheels and I was out of commision for about two weeks getting a new wiring harness both under the hood and dash. Back then (early 70's) there were still Auto Wrecking yards around here with 58 Buick's still in them. The shop got one harness from one yard and the other from somewhere else, took them apart to check condition, cleaned all the connection points, re-taped them and it is still in the car today.

Guess I should be buying a spare coil just in case? (and a wrench for that battery cable)post-36036-143141996504_thumb.jpg

Looking forward to seeing your Limited and you in South Bend.

  9. What a spate of bad luck! Hope Mom is okay! And maybe it pays to check your local craigslist- Kiwi? to see if your stuff is listed for sale. God knows the cops won't do it.

Thanks John for the few words on my rant (sometimes it helps).

Mom fortunately has not had a stroke but.... the event is a fore warning of the potential that can / might happen and currently is undergoing a bunch of tests to maybe avert such a thing happening so... doing what needs to be done and time will tell. Thanks for asking.

Also in the mean time, keeping my eye on Graigslist and Kijiji and so far nothing showing up. My suspicion is the two houses in the neighbourhood that have new renters (kids) and their friends that just moved here in the last four months. Had two of the younger ones pop into the back yard one evening while sitting at the table. They said they were playing hide and seek when I went out to confront them. One was hiding between the Limited and the shed (very tight) while the other was looking for him. They had squeezed between my neighbours new fence and my back corner all behind the shed and garage! Made them squeeze back out and said NO MORE! I have temporarily nailed chicken wire up but need to finish it more secure soon. Might not be them but...

I have a few new locks on things where I did not before all these years.

  10. I grew up with Dad owning a 1920 Willys Overland touring which he finally gave to me two years ago. Dad was always giving the neighbourhood kids (and adults) rides when ever he felt he had the time and while not a restored car he always asked them to be careful of the original well worn upholstery and answered all questions they asked.

I have had occasion to see some of these kids (like they are now grandparents) and often they would comment to me how they remember Dad and the rides he gave them. These cars are history and often spark deeper conversations about how we used to live, the times and the things we sometimes now take for granted.....

Feeling, touching and experiencing (without destroying) are the best learned lessons!

    post-36036-143141976775_thumb.jpg

My 2 cents, I intend to keep that tradition alive.

  11. To all my fellow Canadian Buick Members, HAPPY CANADA DAY!

Hope you all can enjoy your family and friends and maybe a bit of Buick time too.

For me it has been a "one step forward and two backwards" situation these past few days with having to deal with my mother who appears to have had a mild stroke. No one called me till Friday evening and while she was sent home, we have to spend Tuesday at the hospital to further evaluate the results and possible consequences. With Mom being the only licensed driver and still living in their own home at 85 & 89, life just might be taking that big left turn for us all....

In the mean time, I have been dealing with too much rainy weather this past week and the swarms of mosquitoes (even during the day time) like we have not seen for a few years making outside work very difficult.

Then... on Saturday morning went out to the truck and found the drivers door not fully closed. While waiting for the wipers to clear the windshield, looked around and realized my portable GPS was not on the floor. I called my son, thinking he might have borrowed it (he usually asks me first) and he said no he had not. I was sure I had locked the doors but apparently didn't set the alarm. I did however leave the window cracked open just a bit as my driveway is on the west side of the house and the heat can be terrible sometimes. They/he/ THIEF must have figured that out and used something (coat hanger?) to hit the electric locks (thanks FORD designers!). Later that afternoon I looked around further and noticed my digital camera that sits in its case in the lower pocket of the side door was missing too! I had some pictures of my work on it and Dad and the Limited that I had not down loaded yet.....

It had to be a grab & dash as they totally missed the more than 6 bucks of loose change sitting in the cup holder of the console!

To add to the frustration, the Police told me I had to go online and file a report if I wanted to get a copy of the report by e-mail free. WHAT! Otherwise there would be a charge to send a written report to me for insurance purposes! My first attempt, timed out (getting old?). The second attempt, would not accept all the information I thought it asked for.....

Guess my second cup of coffee has kicked in as I'm ranting now!

I have stated before that things are just that, things and will give it the importance it deserves and concentrate on Mom & Dad. I have insurance and the truck wasn't damaged, however, there is one more "thing" I'm looking into....... a possible surveilence system!

I wonder what it will cost me to submit my copy of the culprit in action for the Police to catch this guy????

  12. Hi,

I never was able to find a kit either but up here in Canada there is a company called John Stuart that I sent the master and booster together for them to rebuild (not cheap) and as yet have put it on my Special.

I believe that someone advertised in Fountain Hills, Arizona that did them also but can't remember their name. Try a Google search if no one else chimes in here.

Actually, The Centenial Meet in Flint, being a non Judged Show, was held like that.

The photo below is what was parked on the Thursday. Someone captured this shot and posted it with many other years on the past Buick Nationals. That's me & my youngest son standing there. On Saturday there had to be another 12 more fill in the space.

It WAS A THRILL to have my red Special parked among those magnificent 58's!

  14. I have a 36 6 Airstream roadster. I bought my rubber bumper grommets from Steele rubber and they fit well. I believe they have the other seals as well. I also bought headlight pads which were correct and glovebox bumpers. I had to shave the glovebox bumpers down as they are too thick to allow the glove box to close properly. I know there side window seals for setting the glass into the Chrome window frames on a convertible will not work though. They are too thick. Front hood bumper corners fit well but I haven't been able to find a rear hood corner bumper yet. Hope this helps.

    Thanks for your reply Auburnseeker.

I should have thought of Steele too but thought others that might have these type of cars might be able to better confirm availability and experience first. I forwarded this info to Gary who was thrilled to get. He recently purchased this car, decided to have some small areas touched up, which of course lead to a complete paint and .... now replacement of these rubber parts.

It seems this car has some provenance as to being owned by Chrysler Canada President Moe Closs (retired 1989). I have been promised a ride when it is done and plan on taking pictures which I will post. I did not realize the models were produced at the same time as the Airflow and after a bit of Google searching really like the styling. Your roadster is really something and oozes class and a sporty look. Never too old to learn something about the car industry. Can't wait to see it in person.

    Thanks
