  2. BEFORE you take off that filter, check your points and condensor again. The more I thought about this the more it reminds me of a time we had a wire pull out of the condensor on a 65 Electra. Started, but no idle per-se and it had to be towed away.

    Have you done a fuel filter on these quadrojet's before? If so you might remember that the filter is a paper filter in that housing. I don't know of anyway to clean that other than a spray with an airgun. That might work. But the bigger problem is getting the filter housing back in without stripping the threads on the fitting.

    Basically the theory I follow is don't mess with it except as a last resort, and if you do, remember that there is a spring in there with the filter. This means you need to push the assembly towards the carb while turning the fitting to get it started. If it were me, I'd continue pushing untill I had 5 or six turns on the threads. You just push hard enough to compress the spring and try to minimize metal to metal contact on the threads while getting the fitting started.

    And Dan and Mr. Earl are right too. Wish I could be there to come out and pick you up for the show.

  3. It's only a guess, but I doubt it's exhaust valves. I had burnt exhaust valves in my 56 and it still had enough power to move at highway speeds. I'm thinking clogged fuel filter, or disintegrating vacuum hoses. If you get the car started, does it still have power brakes? If not, then check your vacuum lines.

    Last summer before going to Flint I changed one deteriorating vacuum hose on my GS. Unfortunately I used a hose that was too large in diameter. When the car warmed up the hose began leaking and I had a terrible time with the car. Although I had enough power to travel at highway speeds, the engine ran rough most of the way. The hotter the weather, the worse the problems. Ruined a nice trip.

    Anyway, I suspect you may have a bad hose going to the brake booster, which would be a much larger hose than the one I had a problem with. You may be able to find replacement hose first thing in the AM on the 4th, although I would check for a NAPA or Advantage Auto close to where you are. All you'll need is a pair of pliers if this is right.

  4. If it's a 56 it's a 322. If it's earlier, it's most likely a 263/264. Here's some additional infor I just learned from the Standard Catalog of Buicks.

    Since it is a two barrel carb,

    1953 The Special would have the 263, the Super model would have the 322

    1954 same thing

    1955, The special would have the same thing, but the Super would now have a 4 bbl carb.

    1956 All models had the 322 and the Special alone had a 2 bbl carb.

    There was a redesign of the harmonic balancer in 56 which would isolate that year. The other years probably need the engine number, and the services of Dave Corbin's database of information.

    Rob, What happened to that tire? Was it just old? Or was there an unavoidable road hazzard? Good job keeping that old girl under control. And a sweet ride. Love those big Electras....

  6. No and Maybe. The first picture shows the transmission cooler lines. The second picture shows the upper radiator hose but below that is the Transmission Modulator Valve, which is hooked to a vacuum line. The pics are too small for me to see the crack you mention. If it is in that transmission modulator vacuum line then this might be the hiss noise you mention.

  7. The power steering pump is on the passengers side towards the windshield. I wonder if this noise could be coming from the egr valve, or did the air hose from the aircleaner to the throttle body develop a crack? If it did, then you may have noticed some roughness in the idle

  8. Two possibilities on the clutch. First is the dashboard switch may have burnt points. Had this on my 69 but I know the 72 switch is a bit different. The other thing is the compressor may not turn on if the system became discharged. Look at the top of the inside of the hood and see if you have the tell tale overspray of compressor oil across the insulation.

    Also check the condensor in front of the radiator and look at the corners to see if you have an oil spot there. While looking won't fix either problem, it will give you an idea of what you're up against price wise.

  9. The title does not indicate the car is a wagon. According to the standard catalog of Buick, there were 4600 8 passenger models made and 9100 6 passenger models made, but they hardly ever come up for sale let alone ones with factory A/C.
