  1. Bob........you’re just envious that they found me fascinating, and my “Grandpa” who was riding shotgun didn’t get any attention from the ladies. Wonder why there was only four of them.........usually I have half a dozen or more schmoozing me...........I bet it took you half an hour to snap a shot with only four ladies in it. I’ll forgive you for misleading everyone here that I only have four at a time hitting on me. THIS TIME! 😝

First time I have ever seen this photo........it was lots of fun, and a good comeback from all the ribbing I have been giving to you.......Bravo!👍

PS- all those lovely ladies are 10 times more maintenance than your 33 Pierce Arrow V-12.

  2. It is possible to set up a car that you crank to start, so it can NEVER kick back and hurt you. The process involves setting the timing so it only fires at one degree past TDC when on full retard. The inertia of the flywheel makes it impossible to kick back if it fires just one degree past. It takes time and skill to set the car up correctly. You need to be sure all the linkage is tight and doesn’t vary. I have my 15 T set up this way. I just kick start it on the down stroke......fires up every time. And no danger of injuries. On our P1 Rolls, I can shut down the engine with the choke on, and then turn on the ignition and swing the advance mechanism to fire the magneto.......starts up half the time even after a few hours. Lots of fun to show people on the field. They call this method a “free start.”

  3. Here is a rare photo........of Bob not wearing his hundred year old hat. He is bumming a ride onto the 18th green. He was very helpful getting the car ready for the field. Every time a beautiful lady walked by, he made sure to talk to them. While I poke fun at my friend......he was very helpful on the field that year when we had some very difficult issues to deal with. This year, we will have a car on the grass again, and I’m hoping that he and his better half stop by.......and buy me a twenty five dollar glass of champagne.

  4. Important parts.......I have seen this countless times.........basket case projects with “extra” or unknown parts missing. I have never seen crankshaft weights attach like that............all the more reason to look, and figure out what may or may not be missing. Without reference photos from an identical or similar car........no matter how good a skill set you have, problems can appear despite doing a complete and detailed job. With today’s modern oil, and the possibility of unknown missing or altered oiling system parts.......it’s why I suggested to keep the clearance on the sloppy side of the acceptable range. I don’t know any very early engine experts, but I think posting extra photos, and asking lots of questions of members here will be of great help. If I were building the engine, I would run it on a stand for twenty hours before pulling it apart again, checking everything, and then install it in the car. After fifty years I have learned the shortest way to a good outcome is taking the long road BEFORE trying to go for a test drive. Are there any other cars that have photos available from past restorations?

  5. It’s a great car. I know he has been working hard to make it right. I can’t wait to take it for a spin and see how it drives. Maybe if I give him a two thumbs up approval we can take it through the drive through at In & Out Burger...........at those prices......it’s either you or I doing the buying! I can see him now, asking for twenty extra packets of catchup...........so he has some for the house. When he reads this one......he will be laughing and wincing at the same time.

He’s probably got a stash of McD’s catchup in the cupboard, along with their packets of salt and pepper.

  6. I say we buy a six foot long crow bar, and use it to pry his wallet open to buy us each a happy meal at a McDonald’s. I know it’s kind of a stretch for him to spend four bucks.......but he’ll, it’s worth a try! I can see his smile as you show him this post...........not sure if he will have that two thousand year old hat he always wears on at the time.....but that’s how I picture it...........and, the shaking of his head.

Frantically checking for vaccine availability, working on my taxes, waiting for the mud puddles to dry where 1800 sf of broken concrete in back (garage approaches and parking) were removed (long story), fixing Annie's 1969 VW squareback (aarrgghh), cleaning up the House of Chaos (1800 sf garage where the work gets done)--want to change places?

Not for all the cars in your garage.......or for mine............I’ll post photos, so you can live through me vicariously. Hell, your like 150 years old now.......you haven’t got you shot yet? I get my second the day after I get home from the tour. That’s is a sad state of affairs........the extremely elderly should have received their shot already.  If it makes you feel any better..........I’m certain to have a fantastic time. 😏

  9. Great day for a drive south along the Atlantic........sunrise on the way to breakfast at 6:50 am...........remember, it’s not all fun.......I’m actually on the clock working. A collection managers suffering and work is tedious and difficult. The car is quite special..........and, to answer your question......the boss bought breakfast!

There are; brand new ones with 0 miles!  According to that August, 1976 Motor Trend article I referenced in a different thread, there's about 100 brand new Model T's on a barge that went down in a storm.

Someone went down to the wreck, and have published photos.....

  11. Another lame sensational story on a VW. The fake era of barn finds and special discoveries is a huge yawn. The real great stuff being pulled out today makes this story look like a child’s fable. Sadly, the true great finds get little notice in the media. Recent discoveries make this look like just what it is........a pile of iron oxide that’s not worth reading about.

  12. Harm.......as far as oil channels go.......... does the car have a scupper? Often times when you buy a car and somebody has been in the engine the scuppers disappear. I have a friend rebuilding an early four-cylinder and he did it three times. On his fourth attempt I stopped by the shop just by luck, I asked him why he was doing it again and he said he kept locking up. I told him the engine originally had scuppers  on the connecting rod, and a windage tray......they were missing. He was able to get photos and make what he needed. I’ve never done a single cylinder horizontal engine. I have done an early twin horizontal. You can clearly see grooves on the exterior of the connecting rod to catch oil and let it into the bearing. Do you have the advantage of modern oils, but I think a little bit of research and some photos on anything even closely similar it’s going to be necessary.

That was the first thing I noticed, too. One of the three restored cars has the wheel discs, and it looks really cool with them on. I tend to agree with you a little bit in regards to styling, but through the decades of admiring all of the LeBarons, the coupe has grown on me, and I certainly would enjoy having one in my garage, and I would certainly enjoy driving it all over creation.

I’ll hold out for the Hussy Packard if I thrown for a LaBaron.............

  14. I have bought some of the worst junk piles on the face of the earth, and some of the absolute best things in the world on wheels......I NEVER low ball............I will explain what my reasoning is for making an offer. And it they are dreaming of a huge number, I will also explain to them my thought process BEFORE I go and take a look. I have been more successful than most at making deals. Sometimes it takes a few years for people to grasp reality........and it serves you well not to be insulting. Hit them between the eyes with brutal truth, but be polite, take your time, and explain why. It pays off in the long run. It doesn’t cost anything extra..........

  15. An old car friend passed away yesterday. A collector of all cars since the late 40’s in the VMCCA, and a charter member of the CCCA back in 1954 if memory serves me..........a collector of Rolls Royce cars among countless others. Google him, and read his obituary.......an interesting man who went to the same grade school as my father, he was an interesting and unique gentleman.........who was around at the beginning of the car hobby.
