Thanks all, especially EmTee and Tom M., regarding the drum colors. Mine are exactly that - a quick spray of black across the drum face and nothing on the fins. Mine (rear ones, at least) are cast iron and have a 60-fin count. As mentioned, they are not OEM factory, and my '63 came standard with the wheel covers with the all silver tri-shield center emblems.

So now my remaining unanswered questions are:

Are the front cast iron drums different from the rear drums? Telriv said "Better off sourcing good used. Rears are easy.

Fronts are much more difficult & pricey." Which makes me think fronts are different, even cast iron ones.

Where to get good rear used cast iron drums as Telriv suggests, making sure they fit a '63?

And should I be looking for specific part numbers front and rear to make sure they fit a '63? (BTW my Riv still has reverse thread bolts, both front and rear, on the passenger side.

     Thanks for your collective input!!

    -Jan

Jan, To alleviate any confusion: The fronts only are 12" aluminum. The rears 12" cast iron (not al) from the factory. Yours look original/correct to me.. not replacements.

  2. A quick online search and I found their number. Call them and screen.

If you are not comfortable with sellers' terms and conditions, don't move forward with your purchase.

Others may disagree, as the buyer, you have as much say regarding these stipulations as the seller does. Don't like it? Don't buy it.

I generally don't like it when people dictate how my money will be spent.

Although your description is very brief, there is an aspect to it that would make me flinch if I were in your shoes. Good luck. And don't forget:

Plenty more fish in the sea. I believe it is also a strong buyers market for model A's.

  4. Some of teh old oil will drain if you remove the filter. Most of it is scummy sludge like plaque in my arteries and wont dislodge unless disturbed.  If you still have the valley cover off how about a wet dry vac and at least get those puddles along the lifter bores. I wouldn't muck around too much though, you'll be inviting mess to loosen up.

Your used lifteds should have a little oil from cleaning, right? I wouldn't pump them up tight.

In the end what you did was some disassembly, inspection and a new timing chain set, correct? Fire it up👍

  5. I use a junk rocker shaft a chain and the engine hoist to remove and install cylinder heads on these engines.

I also use two head bolts with the tops cut off to guide the heads back into position.

Your problem is likely the rear drain hole for the rocker shaft. The oil drains through the rear rocker shaft bolt, then through the neighboring head bolt, finally through to the crankcase.

I use copper gasket spray on steel shim head gaskets and that has solved the issue for me

Whoever ordered it originally took great care to check the boxes on the order form that made it the fantastic car that it is today. Everything on that car could have been ordered by anyone at any Chevy dealership

Every car is most certainly not ordered at the dealership by the end user.  In actuality, most dealer stock is manufactured for general inventory.

Perhaps there is documentation provided to Joe that verifies a custom factory order but otherwise is pure speculation.

Just as likely Mr and Mrs Smith went car shopping one fine Saturday, found this car and made it theirs.

There is nothing on the car that calls it a "Tuxedo Edition". The OP is simply repeating what someone else has told him. This is a factory Landau Coupe that happened to be ordered in black with white top. Let's not make it more than it is.

Ok. Sounds like i Beyer quit the chatting about the guys nice Chevy here.

Besides, I have an appt at my proctologist. I sometimes have a hair growing sideways. He takes care of it for me.  Ever happen to you, Joe?
