I have a sample spring being delivered next week that are in stock at Lee Spring that are very similar to my originals. Hopefully I will get lucky this time and not have to have them made.

The sample valve did not work so I will be having new springs made. Anyone interested in going in on a group buy please let me know this week so you can be included on the order. The more we order the cheaper it will be for all of us.

Well I have possibly found a spring in stock at Lee Spring (incredible online catalog) it is very similar to the dimensions of my original springs. I have ordered a few samples to be sure.  If these work I plan to order 50 to cut the cost per spring down to under $10. I'll keep you posted.

The spring they had in stock was 1/4" longer and a slightly larger wire diameter. This results in spring pressure in the valve closed position of about 80 lbs. Too high for my application. So without any further options at my disposal it looks like I'll be placing an order for custom springs. I'll be doing a bulk order of springs so if my spring measurements meet your needs let me know if you would like to join our bulk purchase.

  4. I have run out of luck finding a set of valve springs to fit our 1914 Chandler Light Weight Six. So it looks like I will have to get them made. Once the set up of the machine is done the cost and time to run more springs is not that great. So I am reaching out to you to see if anyone is interested in a set of springs. Here are the dimensions of the springs I plan to have made:

    • Unsprung height= 4 3/4"
    • OD= 1 5/16"
    • ID= 1 1/16"
    • Wire diamater= 1/8"
    • Number of coils= 13

If these dimensions are correct for your car please let me know if you are interested in going in on a buy. If you have the ability to make these springs and are able to do a limited run please chime in as I am looking for additional quotes as well.

  5. WOW, what a nice smooth finish with no cracks in the paint. Enjoy that as long as it can last. BTW I am loving seeing the pictures of your car without the body on it. Our cars are so similar and just 5 years apart. Curious what condition your water manifolds on top of the blocks are in. Mine had a copper lining on the inside to try and protect the outer layer. It worked for a while...

  6. I guess I am fortunate to have a good local tire store. the last time I needed tires for my truck I did my own research, found the tires I wanted and then went to my local store. They were able to order them for less than I was able to purchase them online. I am able to do the same with some of my classic cars from the 60's. The early cars I take care of at home.

If there were no other issues, I would put it back together and run it.  The likelihood of having three separate, otherwise asymptomatic leaks in two separate monolithic jugs is almost zero.

If you chase a problem that isn't there, you will find it.

Agreed. I just finished cleaning the valves and doing a fresh lapping job on all of them with particular attention to those that were shiny. Once I get new valve springs I should be ready to go. the Folks at Then And Now Automotive are looking to see if they have a match in stock, otherwise we will probably have some made.

  8. Guys I am really thankful for your input and sharing your experience. The engine in question has new (modern one piece) valves replaced by me in 2019. At that time I found one that was cracked and discovered they were the original two piece valves and replaced them all. At the time I chose not to replace the springs as they all looked good. The engine, as best I can tell based on the odometer and the history that has come with the car,  has about 17k miles on it. The pistons are original and I suspect the rings are too, though they (rings) may have been replaced in the 60's when the car was last restored.

Before tearing into this engine, this was a very smooth running engine. I hope that when I am done she'll be ready for some more tours.

I think maybe since I have the valves all free I'll do some light lapping on them as I hope not to disturb them again for a while. I also will do a complete compression check before I am done.

My first idea was a coolant leak - seepage from head gasket maybe? but usually both valves would be clean so... I dunno.

Except in this case the engine is an L- head so there is no traditional head gasket.

  10. I am familiar with how to read a spark plug based on the color and condition of the electrode. I am in the process of replacing the valve springs on our 1914 Chandler Light Weight Six and have all of the valves out now. I was surprised to fine three of the (exhaust) valves so clean and shiny. The exhaust valves are the odd numbered valves in the picture below. Can you help me explain why these three stand out so much from the rest? Note the #5 exhaust valve is next to the intake valve spring that broke on me (reason for replacing the valve springs at this time).

Does this mean your chains were not the issue?

I would say the chains were worn out but were not the cause of the change in performance that we noticed about a year ago when we were touring.

Can’t wait to see how she runs with new chains and new springs.
