1. ...I did not mean to do so. I love Oldsmobile and I want to know more about them. I also love Cadillacs. My dream car is a 1956 Caddy...Series 62 sedan, coupe, or Series 60 Special (I had one briefly ) and I hope to get one in the future. At this point, however, I have my '47 to finish and the '69 to maintain and improve. Did you get my private message, Glenn? I would love to see those lists and product information for the '69
2. All I can say, Scott, is AMEN to those sage words. And you are right about the quote: it comes from Friedrick Von Schiller, an 18th century play wright's works. Von Schiller was notible because he focused on Man's nature as animal and soul...fascinating stuff actually. Made him very unpopular with the establishment at the time but immensely popular with the radical student element. Some things just never change. Personally I would have stood oogling your Starfire rather than the Cutlass 4-4-2. I know I will appear some kind of heathen to the rank in file by saying this but I think the cars are overrated. So geht es zum leben. Each to his own, I suppose....different strokes for different bores etc, etc.. I have had my car at two shows, one in Estes Park on the 4th of July (massive turnout and a lot of appreciation) and the big Classic Chassic Car Golden Girls event in Houston, TX last year where my beautiful Dutch (the 47 is named the Flying Dutchman for obvious reasons ) sat next to a 1957 Cadillac Eldorado Brougham and was summarily ignored. OK, I will admit it is only a 3 on the 6 point scale, one that covers a large range of cars I might add, but I dare say that is good enough to be appreciated. I never tire of the joy he brings to the older folks whose smiles shine with memories, and the delight younger people show at seeing something of the past rolling past. Lots of 'thumbs up' out here in Boulder!! SO I am not bitter in the least, rather resigned that as in so much else people today look only skin deep and see little of the spirit and value of what they percieve. A failing of the material culture and cult of youth?? Perhaps. Hmmm. At 46 I am not exactly ancient. Anyway for what it is worth I see the 4-4-2 as a marvelous machine, not quite the same as say the 1967 Pontiac GTO or the 1964 Chevrolet Split-window Corvet Stingray, but right up there. Of course this is all my opinion and I recognise it has the same intrinsic value and rarety as my nether region but there it is I am sorry you had to pass on the Starfire. I am in a similar position, due to the fiscal slump I am in, where I may have to pass on the Cadillac and keep the Oldsmobile. I would HATE to choose between them but were it to come to it, as it surely may, I will have to choose the one that is more reliable. But that is a decision best left to another day. Does anyone read Asimov any more? "I Robot" says so much to the modern time. Thanks Scott! Nice to meet you.
3. OK. I may see what my local upholsterer has to offer. I think, as with the 303, that the stuff GM has to offer sounds like K2R. When you spray K2R on, it smells like dry cleaners fluid and turns to a white powder which you vacuum off. It works but can bleach out the color if used too liberally. I just thought I would see if anyone had another solution. Thanks!!
4. Thank you, Bryan. Sounds like 303 is like K2R. I will check it out and see.
5. My guess, Irongang, is that the car is NOT selling in the Buick section or they know something we don't. In either case it is annoying.
6. Congratulations, Sal! My son is now 18, has owned a 1964 MG-B, a 1960 Cadillac series 62 6 window sedan, and now owns a 1967 Mustang and a 1972 Cadillac Eldorado convertable...all on his own (mostly ). He and I enjoy cars and have a marvelous relationship. I pray you and yours do as well. Bless you and your new family! Give my best regards to your good wife. Sincerely, Randall 1947 Cadillac 6269 1969 Oldsmobile Holiday Coupe CCCA, OCA, CLC member # 17963
7. Joe, I should have also mentioned during my rant, although were I have done that it would not have been a proper rant, that companies like Hagerty and Grundy insurance have links on their website to cover issues like this. http://www.hagerty.com/Advocacy/advocacy_avenue.asp [color:"orange"] To use this, however, you have to have a policy and login. I don't know specifically about Grundy or other insurers but I would assume the same. Of course, you know what assuming can make of us. Hope that helps...better late than never.
8. The cloth interior in my 1969 Oldsmobile 98 is showing water spots on the door panels and seats. The kid that had the car before me left the car out in the rain and weather with its windows open...sigh. What product is best to clean this interior and hopefully remove these nasty spots? woolite? K2R? Anyone have any ideas? Thanks!!
9. That is a total relief to me. I have been gathering myself to have the paint and vinyl redone correctly in a year (I would love to keep the original but it was badly abused by a wayward belt sander from the look of it!!! ) and I wanted to maintain the originality of the car but to be honest, one of the reasons I love Cadillacs is that they are generally very luxurious cars. While I love my 98, it IS a bit spartan. So knowing that putting a power antenna in or a speedometer that has a speed warning sensor would not disqualify the car is a real relief. I too put in non-original equipment in my cars at times. My 47 Cadillac's Delco radio is all original except for the rebuilt workings. It now gets AM/FM and has an RCA jack for a CD player or MP3 player like the iPod. But you would never know it to look at it. Same holds true for the clock or the battery for that matter. I kept the 6 volt system but put in an Optima battery. I look at such 'improvements' as being in Tour Trim. I do not have the money for Show Trim. And besides, I am a road bigot. I believe these cars should be driven as intended. Trailer Queens are marvelous to look at and desirable for authenticity however there is a reason they are expensive. I would rather have one good example on display and 1000 others on the road!! Vive la difference!!!
10. Thanks for the information, Terry. I read the letters posted by Tom and was appalled at the idea. What in God's name are they thinking? Why is something old immediately made suspect and thrown away? It happens all the time. Buildings, films, you name it. I am a trained archaeologist. To me these are valuable, if not invaluable, features and artifacts that help define who we were and how we got here. Yes this is worth fighting. The powers that be want to make us homogenous and are working to limit our rights, slowly, inexorably in minute ways they erode what we take for granted and what our forefathers, our ancestors fought so hard to create. This is a car club for many, but it is also a forum through which we can voice our concerns and fight the erosion that is occuring. By saving the cars from scrappage we not only save a valuable resource and artifact, we are fighting the insideous, yes I said insideous, actions to reduce our freedoms of choice, to take away our rights by taking away those things we enjoy, and find important. It is the numbing of the American mind and spirit. If we sit quietly and wait, we will not only lose what we have, we will lose the spirit to fight and gain it back. I will do what I can to save the old cars, their parts and their history. It is but one front on which we can show our voice. I hope others will join me in this. I want to see a day when our children see and understand the importance and value of the artifacts of the past and how it reflects our future. Not just in the material value but also in the cultural value that makes it American. OK, I will now return you to your normally scheduled program.
11. As you all know by now, I have an original 1969 Oldsmobile 98 Holiday Coupe. It is pretty basic with an AM radio, A/C, power windows, and 3 way power seats. Normally I like to keep my cars as original as is possible given my situation and the availability of parts. However, I have been considering adding some options as they might have been had the original owners added them to the car. First I would like to know where to find out what options were available for this car. Then assuming I can find them, how would this effect my car's basic value, and its place in the club? Would it be technically a modified car? I have read a bit on the regulations for the judging of vehicles in show and I have read a lot on this forum and else where on this question. Would someone clarify this for me? Glenn, what do you think? Thank you in advance!! Randall
12. Good idea. I will email him shortly. I have been reading in the forum and in the JWO that there have been 'issues' between some members and/or officers. I don't know any one really since I am a new member but I am all to familiar of 'stupid games and politics' that occur in any group situation. It is a pitty but that is the nature of human beings when in a structured group. Anything else is a mob. Oops...I digress. Anyway I will see what he says! Thanks.
13. Yes that would work...or an old laptop, even a 486 intel, would be fine. You are probably using the free Acrobat Reader that anyone can download. It is small and fast, allows for indexing and full table of content searches. Just remember that a desktop or tower case suffer from dust and particulate matter. You should cover them with a vinal or plastic cover when not in use. And once a month take a can of compressed air to clean them out. It will save you a lot of grief in the long run. Thanks for the reference! I will check it out. I have a laptop, an iBook G3 on a wireless network I can carry into the garage. So I might look into that. Great idea, Dave!!
14. Thanks, Glenn! You are right as rain! It is a Holiday Coupe. Blue, with a light blue vinal top. The crown molding around the top was done in half light blue to match. The rest of the car is in that Trophy Blue. The interior is all blue with the cloth seats that feel for all the world like satin, each panel divided by a stripe of raised pattern. It is really a very handsome look. The plastic is done it a light blue (like an electric blue) giving the car a frosty appearance. Top that off with the all chrome window control panels and you have a very elegant touch. There is very little wood graining, just a stripe around the door panels (about 1/3 ") and on the dash. I probably missed a number on the plate. I'm still getting used to these darned bifocals!!! Anyway, you are also right that I doubt my upholsterer can do the job that quickly but we will see. Since the car is all original, one minor split along the seam on the side panel won't detract too much. Besides, I show for fun not trophies. I just love my cars!!! PS I did try to up load my Olds for the picture in my profile but it did not work. The JPG is 128KB and is probably too large. I will adjust it and try again...oh would it be wrong to use the OCA insignia? Just curious. Thanks again...you are always so responsive and courteous.
15. Doug: It depends on the manufacturer of the CD manual. Was it created for the medium or was it scanned and burned in a compatible format. Access is a data base manager, so that makes me wonder. What it means is that the format works best of that product, but it would work for others, which ones an open question. I would have thought it would be released in PDF (Adobe, Indesign) format, or at least Word or WordPerfect. Graphics and text all rely on the resolution your system is working at for the video driver. What looks good on my 720 x 640 might not work at a lower resolution. Also I have found that it is important to know what resolution the original illustration was scanned at and captured. Fuzzy, indistinct illustrations are really irritating, if not down right damaging. I think Chilton manuals are well written. Haynes make an excellent book with normally clear and concise illustrations. But my personal favorite manual is the Motor series. I think the 1974 Manual will cover the 1968 Olds. I have one for my '69. I hope that helps.
16. The code I was able to get is the following : TR 023 51 G I really need to have the seat panel on the driver side fixed before the local show on the 21st. Thanks!
17. I have to agree with Rocket on this. I knew car collecting was expensive but it has become more and more so as people drive up the prices to make a killing, and those into the show circuit who have made it more than a hobby. I have no problem with either of those things really. I recognise competition is a very strong aspect to our culture. However, as with sports, it has gotten so I am uncomfortable to go to meetings. I belong to several good clubs but I tend to frequent the smaller local ones because we all have the same basic interests, similar cars and want to enjoy the company of like minded people. I was excited to join the Rocky Mountain Cadillac LaSalle Club when I moved to Colorado from Houston but on dealing with some of the members, I found them to be very intense. As a novice I felt intimidated, and to be honest a little self conscious of my car because it smakes a bit, and sounds a little like a tractor. I never wanted to show it anyway really, just to have it seen and to enjoy driving it so I am restoring it to touring shape. I have never thought much of how much money it is worth or how perfect it is other than to know I have a classic car that is fun to drive and is in as original condition I can make it. Clearly money is an issue since I am on SSDI. Maybe this is a conflict with my innate sense of competition knowing I will be on the bench. Well enough of my ramblings for one night!
18. Hey thank you, Rocketraider! The TR code is TR 023 51 G I have one small panel on the driver side that has to be replaced due to sun damage. Other than that it is nearly perfect. It's going to a show on the 21st and I really want him to be at his best!!
19. Does anyone know what Colorado may have on the books or is trying to pass in the legislature? Where might one find out this kind of thing? I am new to the state, relatively, and would like to make my small, insignificant voice heard. I have been too complacent watching our valuable rights slowly being eroded away. Is it too late to take a stand and fight?
20. While you are at it, Rocket....does the code give the interior cloth color and type?
21. Thank you, Rocketraider! You are marvelous! This is precisely what I needed. I knew there had to be a way to do it, and your advice on the clock is excellent too. I will do so and let you know how it came out. If you get a chance, check out the car at http://www.aaca.org/photopost/showphoto.php?photo=2125 [color:"blue"]
22. I have several books on the large Oldsmobiles, including the 1972 Chiltons and the 1974 Motor Auto Repair manual, and I still cannot tell how to replace the dash lights. The lights in the A/C and Heater controls are out completely, and those on the clock and speedometer are dimming. I was hoping this would be a simple replacement operation but there is no way my big hands will get into that tiny space. Any suggestions???
23. That is so interesting! I would love to take a ride in one. What were the production numbers on the CDO?
24. I was curious, how different is a 1904 Oldsmobile to drive from say, a 1910 Ford? I have had seeveral friends with Fords and they intimated that it was significantly different from driving cars from the 40s and later. Pardon my ignorance but one cannot learn without asking, nez pas?
25. Hello all! As you can see by the silly subject, to get a handle on what I have here. I love my car...I call him Baloo after the Bear in Rudyard Kipling's Jungle Book...and want to keep it as best as I can. It is all original, even down to the satin interior (there is one sun rotted spot on the driver's seat that will have to be replaced) in that marvelous frost blue which is all in excellent shape. So I was just interested in what I have here. I will be showing him off at the Shine and Show in Arvada, Colorado June 21st this year...my first OCA event (I have been a member since last July but I am shy so be gentle! Randy
