1. I have decided to save $450.00 by servicing my Turbo 400 automatic transmission on my '69 Olds 98. Can anyone tell me how to drop the pan, service the filter, and re-seal the O ring, Vacuum Modulator, Neutral Safety Switch, and the Output Shaft Seal? Thanks to those who respond!
2. Hey folks...I am looking for the new remachined Quad for the 1969 Olds Rocket 455. The original is getting a little unreliable. I found it online but the price is $380!! Can we do ANY better than that? Besides, I want to up the horses a bit Thanks in advance!!
3. What a real beauty, Tommy! Give us more about it! Bravo, Sir! BRAVO!!!

i'm back !!!!!!

Thank you, Randy and RO. I do not have that kind of money which is the point...and I do not want the tank cleaned and sealed only to happen again at further cost. So I will be calling the shop tomorrow and putting a stop to this until I can verify what is being done, and if it would be possible and cheaper to get a new tank. I feel a little unhappy that my shop is charging too much but as PackardBuff says this is the way things are going so we just have to deal with it. I will do what I can and I will question how the process is to be done if I continue it. Thanks again for all your help. Oh and by the way, the tank is in my '47 Caddy if that makes a whit of difference.

gas tanks

Hey thanks for the advice, PackardV8. I will do that. I should call and see if they can stop the cleaning process tomorrow. Then look for a tank I can have retro fitted. Thanks again!

22nd Series 2262

Hey 48DLX, I just thought I might add this, although you may already know it. The Motor Manual for 1951/52 contains all the information you may need for Packard from 1938 to 1951. I got the book off of eBay for $28.00. It has firing order, bolt order on the heads etc. You might look into it. Go to your local library and see if they have it (the Boulder library did) to see if it would help. If it does, try eBay or Amazon. You might also check out the publishers. Hope this helps! Good luck with your new car!

i'm back !!!!!!

OK so I got word that the tank had all this sealant sloshing around plugging up the works and fouling the gas. Now the shop is sandblasting the tank, sealing it and putting it back in for a mear $1075. I think I am being had but its all up front. Ah well. The question now is, how do I prevent this from happening again? should I call the cleaning off and get a new/used clean tank? I do not want to spend this money and have it happen again in a year or two to me or someone who buys it.
8. Could someone delineate the various series, their value and position from those dates? I have been looking at pictures of 1953 Packards, and I cannot tell which is the more valued, the Mayfair or the Patrician. The interiors are usually a give away, along with chrome but none of the pictures give me a sense of what Packard offered.
9. Hey Art, can you answer a question? I thought that the rear main seal required the engine to be pulled. Is this still true? I have a leak in my rear main on the '47 Caddy. My garage wants $1200.00 to do the job. Am I being fed a line? Any help will be very gratefully received. Thanks!
10. Ah now there is a concept! I should have thought of that. Well I figure if I am going to do it at all I should get the right color. After all I did not choose this one. And since the gas tank affair I am going through now has gone up from $600 to $1075.00, I should want it done right just because $3-5000 is gonna hurt. But that is way down the line. There is still much to do on the car. Thanks so much for all your suggestions! I will at least get the right paint to fix the problems so they don't get worse and then when it is time to paint it for real, I will be armed with the right paint code for the right color! Huzzah!
11. OK less seriousness and more fun! No really...I have been a Northern Arctic Wolf for many, many years and I LOVE to hunt moose and reindeer. The painting question may have been too inprecise to say what I meant to say. I realise I need to pull the fenders and take it all to bare metal. I am looking at doing just that. Now that the interior is done (I am pricing putting in the proper broadcloth...a lovely blue grey affair but until then the deluxe limo cloth will have to do) and the mechanics are almost done to spec, I want to do the body in the proper blue. Do you guys know what that might be? What numbers off the body plate would tell me that? I am still intent on selling the car but since the response has been SO underwhelming, I am proceeding on the ass-umption that it will take some time and I will be owning the car for a while. Honestly I would love a '56...that is what I started out with in the first place. Ideas? Comments? And watch the skin, PFH...its tender
12. My '47 trunk handle spinss and spins with no action to unlock or lock the trunk down. I took the mechanism apart and found that the pin or screw (bolt?) was missing from under the handle. But the piller that holds the locking mechanism is a very soft metal and apparently the old bolt (what have you) has scored it severly. I tried putting in an expanding pin but to no avail. The lock itself works fine. And the dual clamp system works too. Does anyone have any suggestions on how to fix this problem? And so far no one seems to know how to fix my handle droop problem. John?? Hmmm? Thank you in advance for your help.
13. My pleasure, Wayne. I try. The question I had is did Studebaker use Army surplus artillery wheels for their cars in the teens and twenties?
14. heheheh would that I could! Ive been dieting for years!!

i'm back !!!!!!

Hey B.H. what could be happening with my 47 Cadillac's tank? It had been sealed apparently in the recent past and is now clogging up the lines with stuff that is unidentifyable? We had to drop the tank and clean the lines etc, at a high cost so I was wondering what could have happened?
16. Please look into the use of the Pollution Credit that the current administration is pushing in regard to how it will be used concerning this hobby. The concept of trading credit points to corporations that have not attained the EPA pollution guidelines has been show to work in a limited area in NY, is now being proposed in California to allow municipalities and big industry to retire vehicles 15 years old or older, as 'high polluters' (most notibly buses and the like) in conjunction with proposed voluntary scrapage programs. This can and will have an effect on the car restoration/preservation hobby. The same Voluntary Scrapage proposal which has been defeated recently in Virginia is cropping up yet again, and now in concert with the Pollution Credit. This requires study and while we should not throw the concept out entirely, we should make provision for saving cars of classic or restoration potential. How we define those 'cars' or 'trucks' is open for debate. What we cannot allow is the whole sale destructionof cars and potential parts. Comments? We need to post more on this forum.
17. I think we should start use the small letter rule when using the word 'classic' to whit, when we are refering to older high interest cars and trucks we can us the word 'classic'. However when we are refering to the cars and trucks from the periods recognised by the CCCA and AACA as classic, we should use the word 'Classic'. Of course that does not help verbally but it might bring a little less vitriol to the forum. What think you all?
18. Another wonderful post, PB. I regret you took my comments against stupidity personally. It was not a shot at any one person or group but hopefully a flare to bring attention back to the reoccuring trends to glorify narrow mindedness and basic ignorance over intellectual and spiritual growth. It is what Friedrick von Schiller meant in his poems trying to raise awareness. So I did NOT intend to insult you, of all people, or anyone out there. My sincerest apologies. I see your point on the guardianship of the car. I would have to agree and because I do agree I have posted several notices to sell or trade it to someone who can better care for it. I have had not comments let alone any interest but that is not surprising. I hope to approach the local Cadillac LaSalle club to see if I can pass it on. Until that time I will do all I can to continue to bring it back from ruin. I have done a fair job and I think it is a good project car. Unfortuantely there aren't many who care for the 6269 of 47. That is OK. I am sure there is someone who will want it. Again thank you for the advice. I print these off and add them to my book for reference!
19. Too true, PB!! And thank you for the clarification. I guess what I really meant was to repair my car's finish. Actually I would like to have the car totally repainted in its original color which was a beautiful deep midnight blue, I have no idea what they really called it, but for now I can only afford to touch up the current blue, I call it China Blue but who knows what it is. I would like to restore the car but given my income level that is impossible. The car I am doing looks better each year and would suit just about anyone who wants a perfect project car. I am hoping I can get it to the point where it is reliable so I can use it more often. I need to replace all the rubber on the car. The strips between the fender, and all of the small pieces that buffer the metal plates, and all the window stuff. But I wanted to know about fixing bubbles in the paint that are hard and stable. I want to check the whole car for rust. What do you think, Perfidious?
20. Yes, Spencer is correct. There are three major forms of wheel preceeding the age of the modern automobile. Wagon wheels; Carriage wheels and Artillery Wheels. I could not get much more than that but I can if you like. Please clarify something for me. Did Studebaker use Artillery wheels on their pre-30s cars? I guess I did not get the real thrust of your inquirey.
21. Yikes! I only did it once and got a little on my lips...I washed it immediately. I don't drink Seriously though, I haven't syphoned in 20 years. Anyway the Caddy is set so now I can pay the bill. I have asked for aid on several projects particularly my son's 72 Eldorado's transmission needing servicing and I have received so much good advice it is simply amazing. I cannot thank you people enough. It is a real pleasure. I hope to meet some of you some day. If you are ever in the Denver area, drop me a line! You will always be welcome in Erie.
22. Great! Thank you again. I will get the thicker gaskets and do the Valve Covers, then take it to a local detail place for a cleaning. Good idea!
23. I will see what I can look up...hang on.
24. Does anyone want to trade a good 1947 Cadillac 6269 for any form 1956 Cadillac in the same condition? I am having to get rid of one car, either the Cadillac or the 1969 Oldsmobile 98 Holiday Coupe and I really want at least one classic car. The 56 would be my choice. Any suggestions, comments? Please see both cars on the Photo Post under the name Lykeios. Thank you.
25. OK thank you. I just wanted to be certain I checked it correctly.
