1. Dear Jesus....do you mean that the front bumpers. rear bumpers etc. are going to cost THAT much??
2. Heheheh Ive been called that once or twice. But what the hell! You got to do the best you can. I am still trying to get over the loss of my Olds but you know, like with everything else in life, this is not a loss as much as an opportunity. The next car I get will be even better. All things change and it is up to us to go with it, see the positive and be opportunistic. Adapt or die...that is what has made Man the winner in the Genetic Game.
3. Joe! That sounds like you may have it! I don't think my Uncle ever did anything under the hood...he just complained about it. I can't wait to tell my Dad. Thanks so much!!
4. Pete, you are so right! Those black cars are hot...and I am familiar with the heaters under the seats. My '47 Caddy has that and it works! Knocked me out when I started the heater fan. What my Dad said he thought it was, was the combination of the dynaflow and the engine. So you may be right.
5. I remember DeSotos from that period, Those and the Dodges from the late 50s and early 60s. Very nice, and the DeSotos were the nicest, especially the 56s. Congratulations on your acquisition! I think it is wonderful!
6. I wish I could help you. Rocketraider is your best bet, however I will try and find something for you as soon as possible. Sorry for the delay.
7. Hey David, yeah I have not been feeling very well, physically or emotionally, but so far it is tolerable. I will see my doctor about it soon. Both adjusters have seen the car so far. The Hagerty adjuster thinks it can be fixed, which I doubt considering I only covered it to the tune of its original value...about $3500.00...but the State Farm adjuster said he was totalling the car. So I have no idea what that will mean. The frame up by the driver door is twisted. I hate to lose the car but it would never drive the same. So I think I want another car if I can get enough from then insurance to pay for it and finish some work on the 47. We will see. I appreciate your help and good wishes. Thank you I am so sorry for the loss of your Olds. I hope that you can get it back to working service. I was floored at the damage your Buick took and still the interior remained safe. I am glad it had the collapsing column. Had this happened in my 47 I am sure at least one of us would be dead.
8. This is a great forum that allows ALL clubs to participate. I also use the CLC forum from the CLC website but it lacks the cross pollunation of other voices.
9. Dear Buick Admirers! I have often wondered why my late Uncles beloved 1950 Roadmaster sedan was such an oven even in winter. It was black (a clue I expect) with that grey/black/white interior, black dash etc. It was the car that turned me on to cars in the first place. Was there any one reason, say the Dyna-flow that can be counted or was it several mitagating factors?
10. OOPS..my bad. Sorry about that! Well there is a Dodge Brothers Club in this forum site, and I suspect that you could post the question in the AACA Tech Questions area. Also, because they are so responsive, you might try the Packard Club here in this forum site. The CCCA folks might help too. I have asked all sorts of questions that generate information. I hope that helps.
11. I suppose that would be true. Cadillacs are more numerous. If anything, I would look at the Chrysler Imperial, or perhaps the New Yorker. Those were cars my Dad's family drove...in fact I would consider a 1951 Chrysler Imperial/New Yorker, or a 1950 Buick Roadmaster (even WITH dynaflow). But the 1956 Cadillac is a car that is in my early memory as the earliest image I have of a BIG CAR. But we will see. For the time being, I will work on the 47 Caddy and get around in my old pickup. There is time for other cars later.
12. OUCH. I thought I would keep you all informed on the escalating cost of the tank...yes that is right, the price keeps going up. It was $1075 and now looking to be higher so they can put in a fuel filter. I should have pitched the original and had another made. At this rate, it would have been cheaper by 50%. The moral of this story is if you are not sure or unknowledgable about the problem, ask online, call your club advisors or friends and DO NOT TAKE IT TO YOUR MECHANIC until you know what can and has to be done. This was a ridiculous waste of money. Sad to say, were it not for the demise of my other car, I would be hard pressed to afford it.
13. Jon, That seems to be the concensus of opinion. The '47 is a keeper. I would still like a '56 but I doubt that will be happening anytime soon. And I am thinking I would just as soon keep the Flying Dutchman. I would like to see him reliable to the point of being my general driver...I am retired and only go to the store, doctor and for the occassional visit to see my parents 40 miles from my house. And there are those tours I'd like to take. Other than that, I could use another cheap knock about...but I hate having cheap nasty cars!!
14. ACK! I don't think there is any danger of it spreading from California to the rest of the country, at least not it the current form. But Virginia is looking at voluntary scrapage of cars older than 15 years. The problem there is obvious. There is no provision for the saving of cars and parts that are deemed special, unique, or in any way valuable. They just get crushed and melted down; Now maybe we should do that with most cars after 1975 but you did not hear that here!!!
15. I believe the first concept as such was used in NY State in 1990 for the regulation of the utilities and waterway pollution. California took the idea a step further more recently ( I think you are right that it was in 2001 or 2002) to use the proposed Voluntary Scrapage and Pollution Credit together to help eliminate older, polluting autos and buses owned by the State of California. It was the implication that worried the Auto groups...that this could be applied against all vehicles on the road. I wish I had more concrete data but at this moment I am without and working off of memory.
16. Thanks, Jon! May I ask why you sold it? I would like a 56 Cadillac but I think I am keeping the 47 for the time. I love it and I think it will make an excellent touring car. What were you experiences?
17. Edwin, I cannot give you that information but I may know where you can find it. I think it is in the Motor Manual for that period, perhaps the 1962 edition would do, and that should be available at your local library. I hope that helps a little. Good luck and let us know what you find out.
18. Thank you, Awini. I will keep it out there but I do not expect any serious consideration for it at this time. Since losing the other car, I am probably going to replace the old truck I have with the insurance money and get something reliable (though nice, of course) for the daily work. Then keep the '47. I appreciate its intrinsic value and hope to have years of enjoyment from it. If drunken morons will stop chasing me and destroying my babies, that is!
19. I run a 20W50 in my '47 Cadillac but I think a standard 10W30 would be adequate. It depends on where you live and the temperature extremes you deal with in the summer and winter. You might consider a new oil for older cars. Most oils in the 30s and 40s had some form of detergent in them. Again, it depends on the condition of the engine and the mileage but I would say a standard oil is fine.
20. Thank you Bill. I must say it is refreshing to get an opinion on this. I realise I am asking high...it gives the buyer and me room to haggle. I would take as low as $9.5 for it which is right in line with what I see out on the market today but as I said...I needed haggling room It is a beautiful car and I was not aware of its being plentiful on the market. Still it hardly matters as I love the car. I will keep it until I find someone who wants it as a better than good restoration project. Since losing my Olds to a drunk driver on July 4th, I am now in the position to do more on the Caddy. Thanks again!
21. Oh you raise the REAR of the car!!! duh, well that explains THAT. Of course at this time it is moot however I will need to apply this knowledge else where. Hmmmmmm,
22. I wish I had the answer for you. But I would first look at the NAPA website for a quote, or you can use Hagerty's website. Then go to the Online Auto Trader, and search for all 1964 studebakers. That site is http://www.collectorcartraderonline.com/adsearch.html. Also check other classic car sites for values, remembering they are inflated. I think you will get a good idea of both the value and what the market will bear at this time. Good luck!!
23. Thanks again, Glenn. I really appreciated all your hard work on my behalf. What can I say? Compassion and forgiveness are part of life. It is hard but it would not be worth anything if it were easy.
24. I have my cadillac posted for sale. I am asking $11.5K for the car. Is that too much? Since losing my Oldsmobile last night to a drunken driver, I need to know if I am out of line. I thought I was being reasonable but I could use your help. Please. Thank you. OOPS...forgot to tell you where to look at it. http://www.aaca.org/photopost Look in the Cadillac-LaSalle section for a blue 1947 Cadillac 6269
25. Thank you, Steve. I am very thankful no one was hurt...especially the young man and his dog who hit me. He is 18, has 3 accidents on record and now a DUI on a fourth. I felt terrible for his Dad who came and checked on my parents and I. The loss of my car was sad; the loss of a beautiful example of a '69 Holiday Coupe was terrible. I tried my best to avoid the problem but I failed. I think my guardian is watching and I am forever thankful. I pray for that youngman and hope he learns this valuable lesson.
