  1. In Chicago this weekend the zone ads for new Buicks included and additional $500 rebate for AARP members. The ads also states you only need to be 50 to join AARP. As far as I can tell Buick is actively going after the more senior market and is happy there. This is where they have made their bread and butter over the years and there must me a "if it isn't broke don't fix it" attitude there. Bring on the Blackhawk.

  2. I did this conversion to my 64 Riv right before Flint last summer. My car is a pleasure only and I don't think it will ever be 400 pt judged. I do however restore it to be as correct as possible. The brakes issue is a different matter. If you drive any of these cars, dual master brakes, halogen headlights and radial tires are a safety issue. I have lost the brakes twice in first gen Rivs. Lose a back tire and wheel at highway speeds and see how well your emergency brake works. The second time I was backing a friends boat into the water when the left front brake hose popped. I dropped into D and pulled out of the launch ramp. With an all drum system there is NO need for a proportioning valve. They are only needed if you go to front disc brakes.

It cost me less than $100 bucks to do the dual master conversion, I am not worried about points, but my safety and my families safety when they are with me. If the rest of your system is in great shape the conversion may not give you anything but a little piece of mind.

  3. I'm not sure what year are on my 64 Riv. I have a set of steel wheels and the bolt on turbine wheel covers for it if I ever get a chance to get the covers cleaned up and repainted. I have the 71 and up caps on it. It was harder finding the 64 steel wheels with the 3.5" hub than the covers.

  4. There is no rim code for a 65 Road Wheel. The spec's for the wheel are 15 X 6 5 on 5 bolt circle. The center hole cap is 2" and backspacing is 3 3/8th". The web color is dark grey metallic satin and the part number is 1233377. You can also use 66-70 rims with rim codes of 802 and 853 but the center cap hole will be 2 1/8". Do not use the 71 to 78 wheels rim codes 895 because of lack of registration ring and or different backspacing. I got this information from the Riview, the ROA magazine, Vol 16 #1 Nov/Dec 99.

  5. My 64 part book shows grp# 9.65 part # 980869 All, Reverberator Unit, Radio, must be used with RR Seat speaker. I have a reverb unit in my 64 Riv that I added a couple of years ago. It does plug into the wiring harness at the radio and mounts over the rear axle. If I recall right I had to make a couple of splices when installing. I have a knob that mounts under the dash that turns it on and off. It does have a unique sound.

  6. Can someone identify the year/application for a vacuum gauge. It is part #565357 4. JAN 16 is also stamped next to the part number. It is mounted in a chrome cup with the same part number as the cup my tach sits in. I am wondering if someone put the gauge in a Buick tach cup.

    thanks

  7. I had a similiar problem with my 69 but only at idle. The supply hose to the heater core never got hot. If I raced the engine I had better flow and would feel some heat. This all happened when I was flushing the system. When the car was in motion I had all the heat I wanted. Mine too wanted to run around 150 degrees. Mine is a 9K original mile car and is not driven much.

  8. Is National Drive Your Classic To Work Day a recognized classic car function? Depending on your plate and insurance you may be in violation of both. Now there maybe a shop on the way to work that you need to visit but in general all of the "old car" policies I have seen strictly prohibit driving it to work. Their risk assessment and pricing exclude this type of driving. That is why they want a "newer" car for each driver in the household.

  9. Does anybody kneo of any problem towns on the way to Flint where we may be hassled in our cars? I'm thinking of having YOM plates, maybe no turn signals on older cars or any other reason to hassle us. I bring this up because on Friday night after a local drive night there was a County Sheriff running a safety check. They were looking for DUI's, no insurance, open liquor and stuff like that. No problems there, but it got me to thinking about the trip to Flint.
