  1. Good Morning,

I have a hole in my carburetor and it is leaking gas. This may be able to be patched, but I believe it may be time for a replacement. I have had some help from a few members of this group already, but wanted to see if anyone has found a good replacement for the Stromberg OX-2?  Is there an option from Zenith that would work?  Any insight and direction would be appreciated.

An original usable pancake oil filter is nearly impossible to find.   The solution that I found, for my 1929 President engine, is a canister filter that looks like an original. The reproduction canister filter has a spin on Oil filter inside of it.  I have had no problems with the spin on oil filter on my president engine.  One point to keep in mind is that our engines are not full pressure oil to the filter.  They are partial flow to the filter.  So you will never get 100% of the oil going to the filter with every cycle.   However even partial oil filtration is better than no filtration.

Here are some pictures of my canister filter and it’s attaching bracket that attaches to the same spot and holes used by the pancake filter.

I got my canister filter over 20 years ago and no longer remember where I got it or who I got it from, however, there is more  than one person out there who have been reproducing these type of filters.

@Mark HustonThank you for the photos. That looks like something I could do.  Here is my next question, what about those (are they copper?) tubes that run to and from the filter?  I assume I will need to get new ones.  Where can I find those and are they easy to work with?  Thank you again!

Also. have you ever taken off your oil pan?  I would like to do that to mine and make sure all of the sludge is cleaned out. My concern is the gasket and finding a replacement. What is your advice for that?

Rowdy Ruggles, The picture you posted looks to be a Commander engine.  The President pancake oil filter is a larger size than what was used on the Commander and Dictator engines.   The President oil filter doe not interchange with the Commander and Dictators.

@Mark HustonYes, it is a Commander engine. Thank you for the info.  I figured the engines were the same. Do you happen to know how to change these out or where I could find a replacement?  Thank you!!

    It's NOS. I have more.

@studerexHere is a photo of mine. I know nothing about the history of this filter or how to even change it.  Do you have any instructions/photos/video on how to change it out.  If you have extra replacements, could I purchase one or a few from you?  Thank you!

  5. My 1930 currently has 475/500-19 tires on it. After a visit to the Studebaker Museum last weekend, all of the vehicles similar to mine had wider/larger tires on them. After visiting the Coker Tire website, it recommended 550-19 tires.

I don't know how old the current tires are on my car, but they probably need to be replaced. Should I put on the recommended 550-19 tires or stick with what is on it currently? I will also need tubes. They are sold at Coker as well.

My last question is about Flaps and Rim Strips. What are they and do I need them if I change the tires?

    Thank you!

  6. I want to change the oil in my 1930 Studebaker Commander 8. Does anyone know how many quarts it requires? I even have the car manual and it talks about changing oil, but doesn't give the capacity. Also, I am sure I won't be able to find an oil filter, what should I do about that?  Lastly, what is the best type of oil for that car. I have attached a photo to see the oil filter.

    Thank you!

  7. The horn on my Studebaker is unhooked. I would like to hook it back up, but I am only seeing one wire coming out of it. Also, the horn button on the steering wheel, seems to not have any spring anymore. When I press on it, it doesn't spring back up. That is probably the reason it was unhooked.  Does anyone have any insight on how I can get this back in working order?  Thank you!

  8. I have got a coolant leak on my 1930 Studebaker Commander 8. I took a photo underneath the engine that I have attached. It appears the leak is coming from the area were that line of nuts is located. Isn't that the oil pan?  I suppose it could be oil, but looks greenish, like coolant. Does anyone have experience with sealing this or what needs to be done?
