I'll see what I've got. Might have some.
Do you have steel spoke wheels?
I have 2 extras that were bought as spares but they have a different bolt diameter? Looking to sell or trade to the right guy. I have a 34 Dictator. I bit of a challenge finding parts because so much of it is a one of year.

Measure ID and OD of the parts you need. I converted all of my axle seals to rubber and found all the seals by matching dimensions at a General bearing supplier.

The way I interpreted the repair manual is that you remove the housing cover and use a feeler gauge between the end of the axle shaft and the block between the shafts. Start with a set of shims that give you a little larger than the .005 end play. Take a measurement for the end plat and remove the amount of shims to get you the .005. Measure again and repeat.

That's what I thought too. My 34 actually already has right hand thread studs throughout.
I brought it up hoping there was some opinions and discussion on what other people are doing. I do what I can to learn what people are doing on these old cars. I have plenty of experience with motorcycles and was in the airforce for 23 years working on plans as old as the T-33 T-Bird.

Reading through this thread again, I have a thought, which I am sure has been discussed. I realize there are right and left handed threads on the hubs. Now when the engineers designed this they were worried about the nut backing off but it has long since been proven to not be a concern. Other than for historical reasons, why couldn't all right hand thread drums be installed.

I would like to buy the drum you listed 182579. It is the one I need for my Canadian built 34 Dictator.
I think I still have your email. I'll send an email to work out details. It might be a challenge with all the Covid19 restrictions these days.

E mail also sent..

Very nice. Like you had said, very little information on the sales slip as to options and colour etc.
On a different subject, I've actually been to Greensboro before when I was Airforce. We did training missions at Seymour Johnson AFB. Good times.

I'd guess that, even for 1934, those production numbers are pretty low?

Thanks Studeq,
That was me that asked. The one in the picture is identical to mine. Surprised there was more 3 passenger built than 5. Mine is a Canadian built one as well.
Do you know the name of the person I can contact at the museum to get the details if any of the options and colour etc that my car would have had?
Thanjs for the info!

I might have a water pump. Dad bought a spare water pumps many years ago and neither of them were the right one for my dictator. On the weekend I will try and remember to look for them and see if they are the right one. My book says the pump body should be PN 184105?
If you dont hear from me on the weekend message me to remind me.
I pulled the water pumps out today. I guess they are not old Studebaker ones. One looks like it was from my dads old ford van. The other I cant tell. No numbers anywhere but I'd say later than 1950 by the shape of the fan. No idea why he kept them?!

Some great news and progress. Last week I went to our local bearing and seal supplier, Motion Canada, and ordered the axle bearings and sourced seals.
Today I installed the seals and they are a perfect fit!
Removing the old seals was a bit of a challenge. The left side had 2. I'm guessing a previous owner just drove a second seal on top of the first when it started leaking . Just waiting for the bearings to come in and I'll finish assembly

Call OLCAR at 910-693-3324 they have an amazing stock of seals like that.
https://mystudebaker.com/driveline/studebaker-rear-axle-shafts-axle-bearings-races-parts/ stocks some of these.
I just checked on OLCAR and they are not answering
Thanks Robert! You are an important resource for putting these cars together.

Thanks Gary.
I found a lip ring rubber seal to fit the axle. I may have to turn down the axle a little bit. I will know better when the seals come in and I can trial fit it together. Looking at the axle and what the felt does and what the leather does, I don't think I need to install felt and a rubber seal. Just the rubber seal.
A week and the bearings and seal will be in so I can install it all. I can not wait!

So are you saying this piece in the picture is metal. From this piece back is plywood until behind the seats. Then its wood again?
-
Awesome. Great to hear what some experienced people have done.
I like your idea to make a cutting press out of tubing too.
Where did you get the #1 felt from. An auto supply store?

The Axle shaft seals I am looking for are:
item 1002-38- 510729 Oil seal inner cork
Item 1002-41- 510966 Oil seal leather
item 1002-29- 510735 Oil Seal Cork

Thanks. That is what I am thinking if I cannot find originals. I have considered making seals if I can get some info from the Studebaker museum. They apparently have engineering drawings for many parts. If I can get size and material specs from them it might be possible and actually fun making some.
-
I am not sure if I have one of those shops but there are local dealers that deal in seals, bearings and industrial supplies that I can find something. All of the seals will be hidden from view so it should not affect the level of authenticity I am hoping to achieve but original design would be my first choice.

Beautiful work. I get a little tingle of excitement seeing this. It reminds me of what all my hard work and money will eventually produce. I am just at the stage of restoring axles to put on a bare frame. LOL

Just finished inspecting, assembling and rigging the rear axle for my 34 Dictator Coupe. All bearing gs are in good shape except the axle bearings which I can locally source. The seals on the other hand are long gone. I need the axle shaft seals (listed as leather) and the pinion shaft seal.
Anyone have a source for NOS , new or has anyone used a modern rubber seal if I can find one that matches the size application I need. Ive searched the usual Stude International etc but none make seals for mine.
Thanks for the help. I'll post up PN when I get home later if that helps.

Terry's 36 coupe has nothing in common with your 34. both the 34 and 36 are both rather rare, very few of the survivors have been authentically restored. I hope that you intend to restore these cars as appose street rodding them. Please believe me when I say that there is room for both restored and rodded cars in out world, but with so few survivors, and so many which have already been altered, I think we need to have a few survivors. The 1935 coupes are the closest kin to the 34, but while the bodies may look the same, they have a different body. The 36's closest kin in the 37, but the 37 used a screwed down tin floor instead of plywood. To the gentleman with the 36, I think that you are on the right track, looks good.
Thanks for the advice. Yes it is most definately being restored original.
Search Facebook for 34.stude.dictator.coupe for my restoration page. When I was just 10 years old I convinced my father to not hotrod it and make it original. He never touched it again but spent many weekends walking Hershey and Carlisle in the 80's looking for parts. Dad has been gone 21 years and I am finally starting the restoration I have dreamt about for so long.

‘37 Coupe Express Artillery or Disc Wheels

I have 2 oddball (to mine) artillary wheels but I think they are 17". They are oddball to mine because the bolt pattern has a larger diameter. I'll try checking tomorrow what size they are. Maybe they are 16's.
