  1. My 26 DB headlight glass has "Standard" in raised letters. I've seen pictures of other period cars with DB on the glass and one with Dodge Brothers on it. There is a glass with DB on it on eBay right now for $59...thinking about buying it....but have do idea if that is 'more original' than mine?
  2. People ask me all the time, "Where did you find the car?" My answer, "Craigslist" gets a chuckle. i don't know what people expect to hear when they ask that. Maybe they think I was looking thru my grandfather's barn and under an old tarp....... So.....where did you 'find' you car?
  3. On one side of my '26 Coupe there is a hinge thing that looks like it held a leather strap that hooked to the door so the door did not swing out too far. But I don't see where or how it might have connected to the door. Can someone please post a picture of what the straps are supposed so I can build a replica?
  4. That sounds about right. I measured the resistance thru the horn and got ~1 ohm. So adding a 1 ohm resistor would drop 6 volts across the resistor and 6 volts across the motor (horn). I found a 0.8 ohm resister....here is my math: 1 ohm thru motor coils + 0.8 resister = 1.8 ohms</SPAN></SPAN></SPAN> V = 12 V</SPAN></SPAN></SPAN> I= 12 / 1.8 = 6.7 amps</SPAN></SPAN></SPAN> So 6.7 Volts across motor and 5.3 Volts across resister.</SPAN> </SPAN>
  5. So I bought a 1.25 ohm resistor....but it measures 1.5 ohms. I put it in series with the horn.....and the horn did not work. I measured the resistance of the horn and got 1.0 ohms. So 1 ohm plus 1.5 ohms is 2.5 ohms. At 12 volts, this is 4.8 amps.....so the horn saw only 4.8 volts.....which evidently was not enough to turn the motor. Otoh, the motor impedance is an inductive load so a dimple voltage divider may not work. I will try with a 1 ohm resistor or less.
  6. it starts so much easier on the 12v. I have the generated disconnected. The only electrical load on the battery is starting, the horn and the coil....since I don't drive at night. I drove it a long time Saturday and honked the horn 3 dozen times I still had plenty of starting power. So for now, I will just recharge the battery in my shop. oh, I also added a 12v fuel pump as the vac tank was giving me issues. I think I have the tank fixed but I've not plumber it back in yet. So the elec fuel pump is another elec load. I may have the gen rebuilt.....and converted to a 12 v.....or I might go back to the 6v system. I'm still on the fence. For right now I am enjoying the heck out of driving it and just doing small improvements.
  7. What size resistor should I get?
  8. This past weekend there was big street festival in my town and they had a car show. I drove my '26 DB Coupe about 15 miles into town and they had the road blocked to the downtown area. I asked a cop how I get to the car show and he said the have the road blocked for the parade that was about to start. He suggested I go to the HS where the parade was forming up and follow the parade in. I did. but when I got there the trail vehicles (cop car and fire engine) fell in behind me! So I was actually in the parade! I had a ball and would honk the oohhgaahh horn every so often to the delight of the crowds. A lot of people showed interest in the car and asked what year it was and such. I did finally make it to the car show. One of the local reporter took this shot and published it on-line in the local news.
  9. I recently converted from a 6V system to 12V. The horn still works be doesn't sound as cool now. It is higher pitched and louder. Recently it started to kinda drag....sounded ill. So I took her apart last night and cleaned her up (pix is pre-cleaning) then put some WD-40 on it and put it back together. When I honked the horn it was incredibly loud! It is still too high pitched and doesn't sounds good. I read that the jam on on the back can be loosened and then the tone can be adjusted so I will play with that tonight. Is there any harm using the moter on 12 volts?
  10. My '26 DB coupe has a transmission lock. Anyone know if a locksmith can make a key for it?
  11. I'm not sure that is what it is called.....but what was the plate on the running board used for?
  12. Harry, I saw that coating inside my door. It looks like that black undercoating you can get for wheel wells. Lowes carries it in the paint dept.
  13. So I decided to take the doors apart and restore whatever I could inside the door. I fixed wood, screws etc. On the passenger side, when I took off the panel I found an old For Sale sign inside the door. It had been taped to the window long ago and fallen down into the door, it said, "1926 DB $6500. Restored 10 years ago. Runs great." It ha 2 phone numbers but no area code. When I bought the car in AL 6 months ago they had an old Iowa title for the car Hmmmm. on a hunch, I looked up the area code for the city on the old title and called one of the numbers. A child answers and gave me her dad's cell. I called him. He said he has had several vintage cars but no Dodge. And then he remembered he'd had an old Dodge 20 or so years ago. Said it was blue and black. Yes!! That is it! Cool. So he sold it 20 years ago with the sales pitch it had been restored 10 years ago, very cool. 30 years ago....in the 1980s, someone restored their 58 year old car.....now, 30 years later, I am restoring an 88 yo car.
  14. http://huntsville.craigslist.org/cto/4686320689.html 2 cars
  15. What type of material was typical for door panels and headliners in the 1920s? Mine has a silky looking black nylon. Looks good on the headliner but kinda delicate for the door panels.
  16. What tire pressure should I be running in my 26 Dodge with wood spokes? The tire is not original. I'm pretty sure there is a tube. There are no markings on the tire for pressure.
  17. This weekend there is "street festival" in my city that will also have a car show. The show is only about 12 miles from my house so I plan to drive my 26 DB Coupe there and enter the show. I have never been to a car show in my life. I am told there will be an entry fee? It seems odd that I should have to pay to let people look at my car but maybe that is to pay for prizes. :-) Any info, insight or suggestions for car shows is appreciated.
  18. I replaced the wood frame for the read window with oak and SS screws. I hope my woodworking hold up 88 years like the original wood did.
  19. The only scripture I can find that deals with cars is about a Honda: Acts 1:14 "These all continued in one Accord in prayer and supplication..." I don't know where they were going but evidently they all packed into one car.
  20. LOL. I assume that is the British equivalent of the shoe fitting metaphor? BTW, that was supposed to read, "Oil can looks original". Darn auto correct on this iPad makes me look illiterate more often than not. Oh, and I do my best proof reading after I pist!
