I own a Model A Ford and it has a 6 Volt Group 1 battery. I'm currently working on a 1928 Chrysler Model 72 and since it is a larger car with a larger engine I was wondering if a Group 1 battery would work or should I look for something larger. Is anything larger even available anymore?

OK Narve N, was the ground cable a steel braded strap or a copper strip and where was it connected to the frame?

Hey Narve N, great photos. I have a 1928 Model 72 roadster and in my situation the cable from the battery goes up to the starter switch mounted on the rear of the engine. Do you think there is a similar routing for my cable on the left side of the bell housing and clamped with that bracket to the bell housing?

If you can wait, there are hundreds of these on sale every year at Hershey for $5.00 to $40.00. Again I'm assuming you can attend. If not keep your eye out on ebay as they appear regularly. Make certain the seller knows what the dimensions are of their puller if you cannot check it for yourself.

Ah! The dreaded honeycomb core radiator that has to be custom made at outrageous cost. I know it well.

I resurrected this post from 2021 hoping that someone may now have an idea as to what these top irons were for.

I've not found anything like that on my Model 72 roadster. However, if it's not a door striker maybe it's a striker for the rumble seat deck lid to the door in front of the deck lid or the golf bag door on the passenger side. I was missing all that original hardware on my car.

Large wing nuts are frequently seen on windshield stanchions. Look for those new in vintage car parts houses and used on ebay.

You may want to bounce this question off of Restorer32 because they (Penn-Dutch Restoration Services) just finished my Model 72 engine rebuild....

I recently had an odd experience with my 1991 Ford Bronco. Battery discharged, took the battery to the local NAPA store where they checked it and said it was good, just needed a charge. Charged it and within 5 days it was discharged again. I start thinking about parasitic drains and have my mechanic check that out and he finds nothing but recommends that I replace the battery even though it was only 2 1/2 years old. Go to NAPA and get another battery, put it in and in 5 days it's stone dead. Go back to NAPA and they charge it for me but recommend that I leave it there overnight so they can see it it retained the charge. The next day they said they did not like what they saw and replaced that battery with another. Since then, no problems. Conclusion, batteries that are no good can take a charge and not retain it, even new ones. Go figure.....

A thousand pardons Effendi, but someone must have an old Gates reference which gives this information. Please.

I have a NOS Gates Vulco 716 belt, no cardboard wrapping, just that etched into the top side of the belt. Can someone tell me what automobile this would have been for?

Mind the exhaust.....

Hi LR1970, the body was pretty much trashed because the car had sat in the woods for 30 or more years. There appears to be some type of pillar attached to the right door in second photo. I cannot recall seeing any garnish moldings from above the doors or any metal roof parts. The doors themselves appear to have garnish molding on the sills and around the windows. If you look at this post you will get a good idea of what the top of a model 72 sedan looks like.

No, I still have it.

Thank you hook.

For what it's worth there are dozens if not hundreds of these on sale at Hershey every year. I have a 1928 Chrysler and I bought 2 last year for $15 and $5 each. Not convenient now of course but worthwhile for future reference. Bring a ruler and thread gauge because those measurements are very important.

Grimy, I believe Gates 3380 is the equivalent of Gates 614 based on my research. The Gates 761 I believe is for Imperial 80 as well as some other 6 cylinder engines of that era.

Grimy, TR24403 is a belt with v notches in it, the 1928 Chrysler Model 72 belt would not have notches in it. This is what I've found to be the closest match: Gates TruFlex V-Belt 11/16 Inch x 38 Inch - 3380 (at 35 degrees)

My 1931 Chilton manual says a 1928 Chrysler Model 72 and 1928 Chrysler Imperial 80 both take an FH-9 fan belt. The Gates catalog says #614 for the Model 72 and nothing specified for Imperial 80. What exactly is a Chilton FH-9?

I'm in New Jersey and what really bugs me is when I see HISTORIC plates on daily drivers and Hot Rods to avoid paying correct insurance charges and to avoid correct vehicle classifications.

With a period Chrysler behind it, maybe Chrysler was the sponsor for automobiles used in the show.

Where do you go to get a 6 volt battery that is not a Group 1?
