  6. Iirc, the chassis is a 1939 120 which did not get a body until this was created for it after the war. With regards to the design, it's very much in the postwar Italian idiom: low, clean, spare, though if it weren't for the grille, it could be any marque. To my eyes, Italian design of that era was best suited to small sports cars but their feel for designing on longer, larger chassis was lacking. Let the brickbats fly!

  10. Yes, what I facetiously like to refer to as "the '49 Frazer school of design": apply a Cadillac-style egg-crate grille with broad, axle-level chrome trim down the sides and large, prominent taillights... In fairness, it does make a car look more luxurious...
  11. "Sport Sedan" was Studebaker's description for their topline, two door Daytona sedan for those last two years of Canadian production 1965-'66. The two-door hardtop production ended with the 1964 model run, marketing thought they still had to offer a model that would appeal to prior Daytona hardtop buyers. It was a pale effort, but they could only do so much with what they had left to work with... This is a car for the hard-core Studebaker enthusiast who absolutely must have the last of its breed.

  13. You are welcome! What I wrote is a synopsis of the Frazer information and events found in the book: Kaiser-Frazer: The Last Onslaught on Detroit by Richard M. Langworth, published by Automobile Quarterly in 1975. It's a worthwhile read not only about Kaiser-Frazer history but also an in-depth contextual examination of the post WWII automobile industry. It was researched and written when many of the individuals involved were still living, providing primary source materials which is now no longer available. The title is a bit ironic given the events at the time of its publication, as the next onslaught on Detroit was ongoing but it was imports challenging the market dominance.

  19. AJ: With only a four door sedan on a common chassis and powertrain to start, K-F offered two trim levels for both makes. Kaiser: Special and Custom. Frazer: Standard and Manhattan. The Custom and Manhattan had the higher interior trim level and choices. This held through 1950 with complications beginning for the 1949 models. Realizing they needed a wider body selection in the face of all-new 1949 Big Three competition, they developed the hatchback Kaiser Traveler and Vagabond plus the convertible sedan and Virginian hardtop. Oddly enough, the Frazer was allowed only to share the convertible sedan for 1949-50 but not a version of the Virginian hardtop body. Both the convertible sedan and Virginian hardtop required considerable re-engineering and special coachwork and frames. That work was accomplished at a dedicated facility in Jackson, MI off-line from the main Willow Run factory shop. The sedan body shell on which they were based was not originally engineered to support such models. These were the most expensive models K-F fielded and the most desirable styles of that first body series now. In the heady optimism of successful 1948 sales, in planning for the 1949-sales year, Henry Kaiser intended to gear-up to produce 200K cars. Joe Frazer, with decades of automotive industry experience, understood that the renewed 1949 competition versus their largely holdover, restyled cars, made the prudent approach to curtail production closer to sales demand. In the rancorous climactic board meeting, Henry Kaiser bellowed "The Kaisers never retrench!" When the dust cleared, Frazer who would have been committing to significant loans had he gone along with Kaiser's plan, withdrew from active management to be replaced with Edgar Kaiser as president. The die was cast. Boring ahead with full 1949 production, reality soon set in. Dealer lots, distributorships and factory inventories of unsold cars swelled to the breaking point. Body banks filled with finished bodies unneeded for production as well as trim materials and stampings were still in inventory as 1950 production was significantly curtailed. Dealers were clamoring for an all-new 1951 car as soon as possible which K-F delivered in early 1950 even as thousands of unsold 1949-'50 models still hung about. The solution to the leftover bodies inventory was to recycle them to become the 1951 Frazers. Originally, the Frazer was to be dropped after 1950. At considerable expense, already built and trimmed bodies were rerun through the body operation to have 1951 Frazer rear quarter panel installed and an overall refreshing. The base models were sedan and Traveler utility which became Frazer Vagabond. The Manhattans were the two formerly Kaiser Virginians and K-F convertible sedans. The 1951 Frazer Manhattan four door hardtop (152) and four door convertible (131), both priced $3,075 included Hydra-Matic transmission and luxurious trim. When the last of the leftover bodies were used up, that was the end of the Frazer. The Manhattan model name lived on for 1952-'55 on the topline Kaisers. Ask a simple question...get a dissertation! Steve
