  1. PS, don't know if you are trying to clean up sludge or stop a lifter tick but I have put auto trans fluid to clean up sludge, I inherited an old 4 cyl. tractor that had set for many years and a valve was stuck. I removed the valve cover, freed it up and changed the oil. It did have some build up in the valve train, but not too bad. It ran fine all summer but the next spring, after sitting all winter the valve was stuck again. This time I freed it up, changed the oil and added 1/2 qt. of auto trans fluid and it ran great for several years after! I added the trans fluid at every oil change...Ed
  2. I have a '56 Buick special with the stock 322 2 bbl engine, roughly 125,000 miles, engine internals are all original. It developed a "tick" on cold start up after sitting for a while so I changed the oil and that didn't help. I then added a can of Slick 50 and the tick went away, it has been over 10 k miles since then with more oil changes and the tick has not returned. I tried the slick 50 from the advice of my brother who owns a vintage GM product who used it for the same reason to cure his cold tick problem,,, Well it worked for us and I would not hesitate to do it again if the problem arises!
  3. Someone needs to buy this, If I was anywhere near there I would have it! (Idyllwild, California) , BTW the seller offered it to me for $2500, probably take less with cash in hand!!! https://www.ebay.com/itm/Refurbished-1964-Buick-425-Nailhead-Dual-Carb-Engine-includes-Heads-man-block/254409008629?ssPageName=STRK%3AMEBIDX%3AIT&_trksid=p2060353.m1438.l2649
  4. Dennis, those "French" locks are available now, look on e-bay
  5. I don't think I used any flat washers, just bolts out of the bolt bin with lock washers , it was soon after I acquired my Buick, I just had to put dual exhaust and glass packs on it! I found the correct left dual exhaust manifold, NOS for $99.99!!!!!!,,,Come to think of it, this was probably before 1999!!!, its all still intact!
  6. Hello, Does any one know of a engine rebuilder familiar with nailheads in the St Louis area or the Midwest?...THANKS,,,Ed
  7. Mr Earl.. when I saw notification that you had responded to my post I was sure it was gonna say, "Bring her down here , Ill do it!!!!",,,Ill post it in other forum too. Thanks, Ed
  8. OOOKAAAYYYY,,,, How about any one in the Midwest good with nailhead rebuilds???????
  9. Joe, I would love to take a closer look at that car but its 2200 miles from me!!!.
  10. Anyone in the ST Louis area good with nail head rebuilds?
  11. Hello, has anyone here upgraded the front suspension/steering on a mid 56 model 48 (special) Buick I am thinking of the Mustang 2 rack and pinion set ups, any suggestions (except DON"T!) Any other options? Show me yours!!! THANKS< ED
  12. I've been wanting to do this swap for some time and have looked a numerous conversions but this one looks like the neatest and simplest one yet! I have already located a doner truck!!! THANKS!!!!!,,
  13. Dennis, I long piece of fuel liner is good to find leaks, just put one end in your ear and move around manifold. I took both manifolds off of my 56, 322 with no problems...... Just the normal "rusty nut" stuff, I had to heat a couple of the header pipe nuts to get them off. The manifold bolts came out nice, I installed new bolts with lock washers and didn't reuse the bolt locks, they are still tight 15 pluss years later,,,
  14. Thanks Joe, I Knew I had seen that set up before somewhere before, I used to own a 65 chevy truck!!! (a LONG time ago)!
  15. Matt, trailing arms and the open drive shaft are not from a 56 Buick model 48. I have one in my garage!!!! I thank you for your opinion.
  16. This will make it a little easier to ID rear end and suspension:
  17. Brad, I'm sure they would have to add a couple of grand if they swept out that trunk!!!! It does appear to have the original 56 front suspension, except for the disc conversion but the change over to open drive shaft required those long trailing arms and a complete different rear end, looks like a pretty straight foreword and fairly easy job. I would sure like to know the make of that rear end and suspension!!!!!
  18. I did determine that the 71-73 RIV boat tails have the same wheelbase as my model 48,,, and a 455 to boot!!! But I don't believe this suspension looks like a Riv boattail!???
  19. I have a 56 model 48 so I am really interested in this car in the link below. I have always wanted (dreamed) to modify my car just like this one!! Can any one tell me what the make/year of this suspension is?, It appears that there might have been a complete frame swap? Anyone familiar with this car?,,,Thanks, Ed https://www.ebay.com/itm/1956-Buick-Special-Custom/293318919763?ssPageName=STRK%3AMEBIDX%3AIT&_trksid=p2060353.m1438.l2649
  20. I replaced the front brake hoses on my '56 Special quite a while ago (15 years?) and need to do it again. I have searched on line and find hoses from 10 bucks to 35 bucks,,, and it appears they are all made in China, even the NAME brands!!! I don't want to spend 35 for a hose if I can buy the same one for 10 but what I am really looking for is a quality hose that is made in the good ole USA....Any suggestions?...THANKS,,,,
  21. Poppy, You car is TOO COOL, I have been wanting to do a driveline and suspension upgrade to my old 56 Special for quite some time. If I had your car, since the drivetrain and rear suspension have all ready been upgraded why not do the COMPLETE front end too? That would only enhance the value and get it steering and stopping like it should. I believe a Mustang ll front end with a power rack and pinion and disc brake conversion is would be the answer to your problems!!!!…..Ed
