  1. Thanks everyone for your comments. The car I bought to restore, had not run for 15 years or more. The car was parked in a semi open garage for this time where it was exposed to lots of moisture. The outside of the transmission is a little rusty. I'm sure after 15 years of sitting in one place, that it needs a full service with all new gaskets and seals ?? I could import the full rebuilt kit and let the best auto transmission shop in the country (Sri Lanka) service it. However, they have never ever seen a Dynaflow before so they will not know how and what to check and how to adjust the various things inside. Looking at the factory workshop manual for the Dynaflow, there are a LOT of complicated procedures to go through, to service and adjust one correctly. This is why I am thinking about sending my trans to USA to a professional and having it done.
  2. Im looking for a left side exhaust manifold for my 1958 364 with factory dual exhaust
  3. No Martin, I haven't thought of searching in Australia. Naturally I thought of USA because the cars were originally made there so I thought there should be a larger population of Dynaflow specialists in USA
  4. Yeah its a horrendous cost, restoring this car. We can not import classics into Sri Lanka so I did not have the option of importing a good car from USA. All my parts come from USA and all my chrome is going to the USA and coming back as well. I'll post a link to my restoration album soon
  5. Thanks for that. Do you have an email address or website for them ?
  6. Hi all, I need to get the dynaflow from my 58 Buick Century rebuilt. One company quoted $5000 and 3 weeks to do the trans and the torque converter. Does this sound about right for a full professional rebuild ? Any places that anyone can suggest I can ask that is competent to rebuild a Dynaflow ?
  7. Hi all, I want to know something about the rear door glasses on a 58 Buick 4 door sedan. When the glass is all the way up and you start cranking it down, does the back of the glass go down first and then the front of the glass goes down ?
  8. Hi all, I want to know something about the rear door glasses on a 58 Olds 4 door sedan. When the glass is all the way up and you start cranking it down, does the back of the glass go down first and then the front of the glass goes down ?
  9. Thanks for that !! As suspected, the skirts on my car have been modified by a previous owner. Mine has 3 bolts to attach it to the car where as it should only use the one main bolt behind the rear door. Can someone please take photos of the inside of their fender skirt showing the position, size and shape of the hooks, and the openings on the body where the hooks go into ? Thanks
  10. HI all, You know the removable steel covers which are part of the body work, which cover most of the rear wheels on a 42 to 48 Buick ? How is it supposed to be fitted to the body of the car ? Mine has 3 bolts. 2 of which are under the car. I was thinking that may be originally it was fitted with clips or hooks and used just the one bolt which can be seen when you open the rear door ? Can some one please post some photos of the inside of a cover and the fittings on the body where it fits onto ? Thanks !!
  11. Hi guys, Many thanks for all your input !! As long as the internal components of the 40 trans will swap into my 46 trans, that's OK. What I'm really looking for is the gears and shafts. The shift forks, i can use mine. Would be ideal to find a RHD trans but I have no idea how to even start looking for one in Australia. I want to pull my engine out for a re build some time but don't want to take the car off the road till its done. Overhauls can take a looong time to do over here, as every part has to be imported from the USA (I live in Sri Lanka) Here are some photos of my car
  12. Would the whole transmission be different or just the side the selector comes out of ? The engine in my car has engine number 45921585 the engine I am looking at buying has engine number RE-132443
  13. Hi all, I'm looking at buying a spare engine and trans for my 1946 Super. I have found the engine and trans from a 1940 Super, in the USA. I live half way across the world and before buying this and having it shipped to me, I want to make sure it is correct for my car. Is the engine and trans from a 1940 super, the same as on a 1946 Super ? If not, what are the differences ? Thanks !!
  14. Hi all, I converted my 1946 8 Super to 12V. Am using a 12V ignition coil suitable for an 8 cylinder engine. What should I set my breaker gap to ?? Also what should I set the spark plug gaps to ?? Thanks !!
  15. Thank you Dale Smith and David for your valued input. I did realize that the noise is from the moving parts of the gearbox. What I was wondering is, if this noise was normal for this car. The input shaft bearing press fitted into the crank of vehicles is in operation only when you press the clutch. Only then is the crank turning with the outer bearing and the gearbox input shaft is not turning as the clutch has disengaged the input shaft from the engine via the clutch plate. When the clutch is not pressed down, the whole bearing is turning as one unit so even a worn bearing will not make any noise at all at this point. This bearing will make a noise when you press the clutch, and be silent when you let the clutch out. My problem is the opposite, the noise is there with the clutch out, and silent with the clutch pressed... The noise is from the gearbox.... either input shaft bearing or lay gear bearings or the meshing of the lay gear and the input shaft gear.... what I'm wondering is, is this noise normal for such a car or do owners of the same type of car hear a slight noise like I do. Thank you every one for your input so far... Much appreciated
  16. Fantastic guys... thanks a lot !! what a relief !! Just another question un related to the oil pressure topic.... My car doesn't have much in the way of sound insulation under the carpets. When the engine is running with the gear in neutral, there is a hum from the gearbox. When I press the clutch the hum stops. Is this normal for a 3 speed standard trans ?
  17. HI all, My car is a 1946 Super 4 door and it has the 248 inline 8. I was wondering if you guys could tell me what the oil pressure should be on this when hot at idle... Mine is below 30 but rises to 30 or above when driven. Thanks
  18. HI all, I'm having the dash radio/speaker grill on my 46 re chromed. The mesh behind the grill.... should that be chromed too or should it be black ? The switch knobs have deep writing on them. Should they be filled in with color ? ... if so what color ? Thanks
  19. HI all, Im hoping one of you guys will have a 46, 47 or 48 radio taken out of a car. Can you please measure the 3 dimensions shown in the attached photo and labeled "A", "B" and "C" and let me know ? I bought a 49 Radio Model 980782 in the USA, had it converted to FM and imported it for my 46 car. The person doing the conversion told me the 49 radio, although it had a different color dial and knobs, would fit in my 46 car. Now I try to fit it and find that shafts where the nuts attach behind the volume control and the tuning control, are too short and do not come out through the chrome plated dash trim enough to be able to attach the nuts. The 46, 47 and 48 cars all used the chrome radio grill but the 49 car did not so I'm guessing the 49 radio may be slightly different. The measurements from a 46 to 48 radio will help me find out. Thank you !!
  20. Yes I plan on brazing it and using it for now.... BUT I still want to figure this one out. The "1942" dipstick is the one that shows the accurate reading for the engine in my car. I drained the sump and re filled it with the amount of oil which is shown in the 1946 manual. Then the "1942" stick registers at the FULL mark. The new one which is supposed to be correct for a 46 Super, registers several inches above the FULL mark. So either, the guy who sold me the new stick got his part number and year/model wrong, or what I am more concerned about, is that possibly my car has a non original engine in it ??
  21. Here is a photo of the body tag of my RHD 46 Super (the Sri Lankan car) Do I take it, this car was built in the USA ? couldn't have been too many RHD Buicks built in the USA in 46 ?!
  22. still trying to figure this one out guys... The broken part of the dipstick which was on the car when I bought it, was found. Please have a look at the attached photos showing the new flat dipstick which is longer, next to the round shorter one which was on the car. Can someone with a parts book please tell me what year and model part number 1342302 is supposed to be correct for ?
  23. HI guys... Waking up an old thread here.... I live in Sri Lanka and I have a 46 Buick Super 4 door. It is Right Hand Drive. It has the USA body style with the fade away fenders and not the Australian body. I wonder how many 46 Buicks were made in RHD.
  24. HI all, On my 46 Super 4 door, the rear bumper cross bar emblem is cloisonne. This is the round domed emblem which says "Super" on it. The front one was missing when I got the car. I find that the new emblems available are chrome with just red painted letters on it and not cloisonne. Were the front cross bar emblems always in this style or should that too, be cloisonne like the rear one ?
