Found this headlamp at a moving sale today. Photos are "as found." Has a tag. but with my feeble eyesight and the deterioration on the tag, I can't make out much more than' the following:

Top line - Best English(?) xxxx

Middle - H & B

Lower middle - Head(?) Lamp

                               No 81(?)

Bottom line - xxxxxxxxxxxxxxx(??)

About 8+'' across the lens face, about 6-1/2" deep, about 7-1/2" between mount centers.

Wondering, what years and cars this may fit? If it is indeed from a car.

"Howes & Burley Ltd Birmingham"

Try  a bit of WD-40 or similar on the label and another photograph. Take photos from the side with a soft (non point source) light shining on it from various directions.

Thanks, Spinney, for identifying the manufacturer. I'll try your suggestions re: cleaning, lighting and photographing. Googled Howes & Burley with results coming up for brass era lamps. But will continue the search.

Greg, I know very little about motorcycles, but that thought had crossed the wifes mind. Was such a light, with the mounts it has, common on motorcycles of any era?

And I can't believe it, but my wife likes it! Wonder of wonders, she even said she'd have it as an ornament! Of course it'll need to be cleaned up with a new glass. Calling it glass rather than a lens because I'd just replace the lens with a round piece of glass cut by the local glaziers.
