Better to ask here http://forums.aaca.org/forum/57-buick-post-war/

The external rods, linkages and slots wear, so may need rebuilding

Download the 1942 Buick shop manual. All of it section by section. The pdf link does not work.

It is very comprehensive and has information that can be used with all straight 8’s.

It has more information than was included in older “Shop Manuals” before 1942-41

And 1952 manual from here (may need to register)

I don't know about the 54 Buick specifically. But there is a generic way of doing it. If you look under the car there is usually a place where the rods are held at the end with a clamp. If you loosen the clamp the rod can  slide back and forth. To adjust, you loosen the clamps, put the gearshift lever in neutral, put the levers on the trans in neutral and tighten the clamps.

You need to check for worn joints, loose bushings etc. and repair as necessary.
