GaryP65
Ok... trying to get this thing started for the first time. Engine has good compression, battery turns it over well.Because I didn't clean out the gas tank, I ran gas thru a can. Vacuum tank sucks it in good but I don't see it coming out (used clear lines just to see if it works). I have had the tank out and can hear and feel the float moving.any ideas why gas doesn't come out to carb? cahartley
NO gas at ALL?Try physically lifting the gas needle in the carb.If nothing shows up there pull the line between the carb and tank and stick a wire in the outlet of the vacuum tank.It would be a good idea to do that anyway BEFORE some crud finds its way to the carb. GaryP65
There doesn't seem to be gas coming out the bottom of the tank to carb. When I stop cranking, the gas flows back to the gas can. I took the vacuum out of the car again and there wasn't any gas in it at all. I don't understand how it can suck it in and not fill the chamber up. Also, I noticed that my vacuum tank doesn't resemble the one in the mechanics manual. That one shows an drain outlet and the tube to carb outlet. I only have one outlet. Otherwise it's the same. nearchoclatetown
Gas will not come out the outlet until the inner tank is completely filled and float closes off vacuum port. Take out the pipe plug in the top and fill it manually and see if gas comes out the bottom.

I've attached a photo of the setup on mine. The tube at the top front is a vent. The fitting at the top rear left is the vacuum line. The fitting at the top rear right is from the gas tank and at the bottom line obviously runs to the carburetor although mine has a drain tap too which is irrelevant as to operation. There is an internal check (flapper) valve to allow a vacuum to develop within the tank but you say your's IS pumping gas from the tank. That page gives you a great explanation as to the operation >>> http://www.geaaonline.org/vacuumfuelfeed.htmI think you will need to remove the top to see what's going on in there. You will notice the inner tank has a very narrow top flange. This flange does NOT use a separate gasket. One CORK, and ONLY cork, gasket is used to seal the innards as the cork is soft enough to "squish" enough to seal the unequal surfaces.Don't ask me how I discovered this.......but I'll tell you: I found THE gasket on ebay and then the light came on....... GaryP65
Ok... filled the vacuum tank with gas and the line to carb filled up immediately. Carb needle in down. There is gas coming from the tube that going into the engine between cylinders 3 & 4. What is the sliding cover that rotates to show an opening in this tube? Should the hole be showing?! Ive never seen such a thing. Also, why does the gas retract from the gas can once I stop cranking? I'm trying to get over the fact this is not my old 60's muscle but the principles gotta still be the same. Remember, this thing has been in a barn for 60 years.Talk to me like I'm stupid please!! cahartley
LOL.........I try to not treat anyone as stupid!.......although there are times when....... As for air heater sleeve on the carb intake the one on mine is wide open. That LAST thing todays gas needs is heat........the colder the the better. My hunch is the flapper inside the tank is not sealing. platt-deutsch
Could the small vent tube on the top be plugged?
GaryP65
Vent tube is clear. As much as I hate to, I'm gonna take it apart. Now I gotta find the gasket.
cahartley
If you can find some 1/8" cork somewhere you can make it yourself. On ebay they sell for $6.50 >>> http://www.ebay.com/itm/STEWART-WARNER-VACUUM-FUEL-PUMP-COVER-GASKET-/301167664985?hash=item461efddf59&vxp=mtrWhile you have the top off inspect the two valve seats which are pressed into the top casting. They have a habit of coming loose which makes for an exasperating situation....... I was going half with mine until, by shear accident I saw the vacuum seat fall out of the seat.Sometimes it would stay and sometimes it wouldn't.Luckily the fit was still very close so a dab of Loctite took care of it. cahartley
Mind you if you have a newer vacuum tank it requires a single gasket.

GaryP65
Can someone let me know if this is an older model? See arrow, does this mean 2 gaskets? Also, the flapper seems to be ok. I also submerged the float and its fine. All the inner working seem to be ok as well.
cahartley
It LOOKS like an old model as the inner canister flange looks quite wide compared to the one in mine. The one in mine is VERY narrow......maybe only a 1/16" lip, very thin and no holes. You need a pair of gaskets.
