Guest runnerkid101
I'm interested in swapping out the stock box, with an aftermarket cold air intake. That's where I stumbled. What route did you guys go with, for those of you who have already done so? Or any suggestions? Any help will be greatly appreciated. Thanks everyone. Guest PontiacDude210
I've seen a good number of them with a filter stuck right on the intake. There's nowhere easy to get real cold air, they're sealed up pretty tight.
DAVES89
If you are doing it for looks then choose what you like. If I remember right there have been some guys who have compared the stock system with some after market designs and have seen no noticable improvement using after market. It appears that the stock system is a bit "boxy" but seems to work good.
Cargirl
I put one on a Ford Mustang years back, no noticeable improvement at all. Perhaps if you auto crossed the car & such you may find a slight improvement. My 2 cents.
Guest PontiacDude210
I like the sound better of an unsilenced filter. It goes woosh when you accelerate. I feel like a nice shiny short ram intake looks good, and getting that factory boxy filter out of there makes a huge difference in appearance, really opens it up. If you are looking for improved performance just go with a K&N filter. If you are set on a cold air intake, remove the charcoal canister, and place a charcoal filter on the line coming from the fuel tank. Then route your piping were it was. Best and pretty much the only way to get a true cold air system in these cars. As with all fuel injected cars, it still will not help with performance unless you get the ECM tuned to be able to use the extra air flow.
Guest runnerkid101
Maybe just a universal intake? I'm not looking for too much horsepower gain or anything like that. Just want to get a cleaner look under the hood.
Guest PontiacDude210
Does it have to be cold air, or can it be a short ram intake? Cold air is difficult and requires a lot of tube. Short ram is simple, clean and easy.
Guest PontiacDude210
I just removed the stock box and relocated one of the sensors, then stuck a cone filter on the tube. I think it looks clean and sounds cool. <a href="http://s1379.photobucket.com/user/pontiacdude210/media/90%20Reatta%20Coupe/20150421_020537_zpsoayiba1i.jpg.html" target="_blank"><img src="http://i1379.photobucket.com/albums/ah128/pontiacdude210/90%20Reatta%20Coupe/20150421_020537_zpsoayiba1i.jpg" border="0" alt=" photo 20150421_020537_zpsoayiba1i.jpg"/></a><a href="http://s1379.photobucket.com/user/pontiacdude210/media/90%20Reatta%20Coupe/20150418_123024_zpswabo6z7c.jpg.html" target="_blank"><img src="http://i1379.photobucket.com/albums/ah128/pontiacdude210/90%20Reatta%20Coupe/20150418_123024_zpswabo6z7c.jpg" border="0" alt=" photo 20150418_123024_zpswabo6z7c.jpg"/></a>
Ronnie
Dude, tell us about your chrome valve covers. I've never saw any like that on a 3800.
Guest PontiacDude210
Dude, tell us about your chrome valve covers. I've never saw any like that on a 3800.There's not much to tell. They're a one off thing, another forum member sold them to me. They appear to be fabricated, but very very well(I couldn't weld aluminum that nicely if I tried). On that note, it appears that Edelbrock is making aftermarket valve covers for the 3800 as well.
jonlabree
The valve covers you are talking about only fit the very early 3800 engines. Not the ones in the Reatta's.
Ronnie
The valve covers in post #9 look like they are on a 3800 to me, and that 3800 is in a Reatta. Are you saying they won't work correctly Jon? They seem to fit.
