JohnMackay
HiAbout to remove the brake drums, they haven't been touched in over 35-40 years. Are there any tips / techniques to do this? Also what's the purpose of the slim slot on the outside of the drum? How do I make the photo larger? Many thanks for any info.John, UK
oldstyle
Your photo is already large. It just needs to be clicked on. I haven't taken the drums off my 37 either so I'm no expert. Hopefully someone who has done it will respond.
Mssr. Bwatoe
i'm pretty sure the fine slot is for checking the linings with a feeler guage for wear...the best way to remove drums is with a drum puller ..it clamps on the knob, and pushes on the axle pops right off...but, I have also loosened the nut with tire on, car on ground, popped it into reverseand removed them..early v-8 wheel puller is the ticket...or a slide hammer, which works..but is more violentto the car and you
JohnMackay
Thanks Jeff, especially like the "pops right off" bit!John
Ron K.
Mssr. Bwatoe is correct but I splurged and purchased the reproduction K.R. Wilson ABV-156 Rear Hub Puller and the hubs that had been on my Lincoln for over 60 years popped off. Keep in mind that the hubs take tremendous pressure to remove, be careful and use the correct puller. Good Luck. If you lived in Tucson I would be happy to loan you mine and, by the way, be sure and use the correct torque when installing them.

abelincoln
I found a puller on e-bay that did the job. Recommend putting the big nut on loosely to prevent parts flying when it lets go.Abe
