Guest Northwoods
Sorry, I really know nothing about cars (philosophy major). One of you says Oldsmobile and the other says Pontiac. Did Olds make Pontiac? Same thing?
Grandpa
Northwoods,By the late 1930s, Buick, Oldsmobile, & Pontiac (BOP) were being produced side-by-side in the same GM factory, now known as GM's Assembly Division. Cadillac and Chevrolet were produced in dedicated plants at that time. By 1940, I believe that the Assembly Division had two plants - South Gate, CA and Linden, NJ. The BOP cars shared a common Fisher made body shell with slightly different fire wall designs. The sharing of the body shell can made identifcation difficult in photos that don't show a clear view of the front of the car. The attached image is a 1939Oldsmobile at the South Gate Plant, with what appears to be a 1939 Buick behind it.Grandpa

Dynaflash8
No it is not a 1940 Oldsmobile, it is a 1939 Oldsmobile.
drwatson
The B+W photo is a 1939 Oldsmobile. Color photo is 39 Pontiac for comparison. Similar body panels, yes but distinct details tell 'em apart. In your photo, I point out 4 or 5 square openings on the side of the hood next to "Mom's" arm...... Yep, 1939 Olds. The placement of the tail lights among other details distinguishes Olds from Pontiac.
