painting manifolds on 1950 Super

I was going to paint my 1950 Super intake manifold Buick turquoise and the exhaust manifold cast gray (right now it is rusty). However, someone told me that originally both manifolds were painted Buick turquoise. Is that correct? Should I paint the entire thing turquoise? Will the paint stay on the exhaust manifold very long?

Ok, you convinced me not to paint it with the turquoise. I had to ask since someone told me that they were originally painted. I think that I will paint it with cast gray exhaust manifold paint though.

Rebecca,

I used the Bill Hirsch manifold paint on my 55 and it has remained mostly grey. Get as much of the rust and other undesirable imperfections out before you paint. I have seen a product at Griot's (very expensive) Garage that you supposedly rub into the manifold like shoe polish. It looks interesting to me, but I haven't tried it.

I've had good luck with Eastwood cast iron grey manifold paint. It's got the consistency of water...very weird to use - and very difficult to get off your hands.

This is after about 3000 miles - still looks perfect. You can see the paint is burning on the heads at the exhaust ports, though. I got docked points for that at Rochester because the judge thought it was overspray <img src="http://forums.aaca.org/images/graemlins/mad.gif" alt="" />

I've had excellent results from using old fashion STOVE POLISH. Not stove paint, but polish. It's black, easy to rub on and last a long time. May get a little white near the manifolds, after some time, but just wipe on a little more and they look new again.Easy to touch up before a show, so you don't get gigged any points.
