Question on what class to enter and on results from Nats in PY?

My 70 GS that I bought in March of 2006 was shown at BCA National events in the past by the previous owner, and I believe it was (is) a Senior Car. How can I verify this and determine what year it achieved that award (for the entry form)? If it was, does that mean I would compete for a Senior Preservation Award? What if it has already achieved this honor as well, would I compete for the award again? Or should I enter it into the Driven Class (it is and will be driven, I do not own a trailer)?

Thanks in advance, Chris

Chris, read the BCA Judging Manual at Here if you haven't already. Also check out the Driven Award info Driven Award

And if you have the previous owner's name or use the VIN if the previous owner registered the VIN for the car and contact the BCA Office at Buickcluboffice@aol.com They should be able to tell you the status of being a senior car or such. Hope that helps, see you in Seattle! Also I could be availabe to drive your '55 if you need someone!

Thanks Roberta, I will contact the office for help! Be careful, I may take you up on your offer! Heck, you could drive the 70, since you are the one who put me in contact with John Maurer, and without your help I wouldn't have bought it! Aren't you bringing a car up?

Thanks, Chris

Sorry to be so sarcastic, but you will definately have an advantage in the driven class over others from much farther away.

Mark, it may be less than 15 miles, I haven't clocked it to see for sure. You are correct, I will have an advantage over others traveling further, but what can I do about that? The same is certainly true for any National Meet, those living closer have an easier trip than those living further away. Of course I know of many cars, not necessarily Buicks, that are in concourse condition and trailered to events, regardless of the distance, but I refuse to do that with mine, as I bought it to drive and enjoy.

The good thing to remember, too, is that the Buicks displayed at National Meets are not competing against each other. Each car -- whether in 400-pt. formal judging, Driven Class, Archival Class, Modified Class -- is judged on its own merits relative to a standard, not relative to one another.

Chris, we're all looking forward to seeing your fine '55, and I'm sure there'll be plenty of help available to bring your entire collection to the National!

Chris,

If you have been given a mild razzing over the short driving distance to the Nats, consider my plight. My goal has been to drive my '41, mod. 46 from MN to Seattle this year for the Nats and to maybe enter it in some class, but not the class that the info in this thread more than likely has placed it. I bit the bullet and had the engine rebuilt and the transmission and rear end gone through while it was in the shop. Even though there are no guarantees, I thought it less likely of a failure somewhere on the plains/mountains of Montana if done professionally at a cost I am a little embarrassed to admit.

As background, all my close friends are street rodders and they thought I was absolutely out of my mind to have the 248 rebuilt. They were lobbying for a 504 Chevy and everything else, trans., driveline, suspension, that such a change would entail. But I wanted stock. This thread, for the first time, brought the rules to my attention for the Driven Award. When I bought the car, it had 15" chrome wheels, the dreaded chrome hubcaps and radials. I thought the wheels really looked sharpe against the black and silver paint job.

Now, after reading the judging notes on the first Driven Award, I find that the car would be in the modified division along with the street rodded Buicks. Mine is not a street rod and I am not going to tell my friends about The BCA class where the car would be judged. They would never stop laughing. And I don't see an attempt on my part to go on a treasure hunt for 5, 16" stock rims, beauty rings, hub caps and radials.

The only positive outcome of this is that I no longer have to worry about a division change due to the back seat and arm rests I found and want to have reupholstered and installed to make it a six passenger instead of a three passenger plus ten eight gallon milk cans . I am already out of the Driven division.

I just realized after having some clear thinking time shoveling snow for the fifth time in 24 hours, that I always had an answer to the comments of "nice car, engine color is wrong". I could have said, "See those rims, they are the ticket to any color engine." It is now all Dante Red, at least what Bob's interpretation of what Dante Red should be.

John

Yes Keith, this is the car here. I bought it from John Maurer in Pittsburgh PA and he frequented BCA and AACA shows, but I can't recall the awards he has received, and the info is in the trunk of the car, in storage 50 miles away until May when the owner returns from "wintering" in AZ.

Chris, I'm not bringing a car, just flying in, will visit a long ago employee/GMI(Kettering University) friend early in the week and get her and her Hubby and kids to come to the show on Saturday, I hope. So either one, the '55 or the '70, I didn't realize you bought John and Lisa's '70 GS, it has a problem though that nobody in the BCA Judging caught, sport mirrors weren't available on '70 GS' other than GSX! But it was still a Senior Car.

Chris,

I agree, it is finally time for members on the West coast to have a slight advantage in the driven class. I really didn't mean to razz you about it. I was just surprised to see how close you are to the event location. I look forward to meeting you & seeing your cars at the meet. I hope to be driving a 1915 speedster from Vancouver WA. (if I get it finished in time....)

Chris, John and Lisa are close friends of mine - the car is both a BCA and AACA Senior car and has at least one BCA Senior preservation. You have yourself a beautiful car!!!!!!!!

I love it! No one is immune from an attitude adjustment analysis of the possible departure from perfection of their car. I no longer feel like the Lone Ranger.

John, it pleases me greatly to learn that your '41 Buick will be making the drive from Minnesota, and, Mark, we're hoping that the '15 Buick is completed and on the road in time for the National Meet.

We're seeing a very strong, early response in the registrations. I'm thrilled to learn that so many friends and their fine Buicks will be traveling to the Seattle area. Looking forward to meeting all of you whom I've never personally met at past National Meets.

I second what Brian says, Hope to meet you both, John and Mark.

Keith, thanks for the compliment, the car is wonderful, and dealing with John was a treat as well. I told him Pittsburgh may have gotten the Super bowl that year, but Seattle "won" a nice Buick!. Roberta, you were the one who originally told me to contact Bill W. about the car, and he also helped me out immensely. It was a 3 year search to find the "right" 70 convertible, but it was worth it!

Thanks, Chris
