CARTER BB-1 Carburetor Question?

With respect to SilverGhost, the valve with the t-handle below the fuel inlet is the high-speed adjustment, not the idle adjustment (the idle adjustment is a knurled screw with a spring on the top casting).

The suggested initial setting of the high speed adjustor is 2 and 1/2 full turns from LIGHTLY SEATED. Loosen the gland nut, and then gently turn the adjustor clockwise until lightly seated, then back out (counterclockwise) 2 and 1/2 turns). Tighten the gland nut.

The final adjustment is done WHILE DRIVING THE VEHICLE. It cannot be done in the shop unless you have a dynomometer to load the engine. Have a friend follow you. Drive at the normal crusing speed of the vehicle. If the vehicle surges, stop and richen (counterclockwise) the mixture. If lots of black smoke is coming from the tailpipe, stop and lean (clockwise) the mixture. The effective range of adjustment is from zero to 5 turns.

Remember to ALWAYS loosen the gland nut prior to adjustment, and TIGHTEN the gland nut following adjustment.
