Intermittents....... or my secret desires (now E022)

Always Something X*X^X$#^&X&*X*..... <img src="http://forums.aaca.org/images/graemlins/smile.gif" alt="" />. Can't seem to shake the intermittents darnit <img src="http://forums.aaca.org/images/graemlins/frown.gif" alt="" />. Coming home from downtown Richmond this afternoon, the SES light decided to show its ugly face. I checked the codes and got an E022C (TPS circuit)...it then immediately changed to an "H".

SYMPTOMS:

*This has been the coldest day of the year...

*The Idle has increased to about 1000 rpm from the normal 750

*The light will come on now only intermittently. Every time I restart the engine it will reset the light and the idle to 750 and then as soon as I drive the car and let it "back down" for a moment, it jumps back up to the 1000 rpm level.

*The rest of the functions are fine.

The manual/some of the symptoms for E022, call for re-torquing or tightening the ECM connections, which I have not done as yet because it has has gotten very dark and very cold out ... will attempt tomorrow at lunch when the sun peaks out for a few moments...

Any other ideas please?

Thanks,

Nic

Yup, I'd go ahead and replace the TPS. They're not too expensive, around $30 from Advance if I remember right (USA GP Sorenson). They eventually develop dead spots and the voltage can drop and/or spike

Set by using Diagnostic Mode and getting the voltage between 0.38-0.42 volts, ED01.

Not directly related, but my work beater Saturn has been doing that also with the onset of cold temps. It does idle down after a bit, but it will hold the idle higher for a little while for some reason, and no codes of any kind? It may be programmed in? In any case, our system will advance the timing when it sees cool incoming air temperatures. There is a table in the programming that varies the timing a little based on air temperature. That will have the effect of raising engine speed but the ECM should still compensate the idle speed through the IAC. If the TPS is questionable, it certainly seems like the place to start.

Correct. The holes are oval-ed. You will want to let it cool off though and maybe wear gloves, cuz you'll end up touching the exhaust from the front bank. May be hard to find a philips screwdriver just the right size, but I've found that pliers are good for gripping the head and breaking it free

Probably not the cause of your particular problem, but if you haven't changed your O2 sensor in awhile now would be the time to do it as it will also kick on the light, which it did in my case.

I am going to attack the situation in an hour or so as soon as it warms up outside.

The manuals troubleshooting diagnosis has a trouble tree (8D1-27) that leads down to a faulty ECM or ECM connection. I think I will:

wiggle wires down there first (at the ecm)

then replace the tps (as I have never done that before)

if those items don't work I guess I will go for the ecm

(02 sensor was replaced a while back)

sound feasable?

***Will be tomorrow before I try the above...to cold and snowing here big time <img src="http://forums.aaca.org/images/graemlins/frown.gif" alt="" />

I removed my underdash panel and wiggled the ecm connections, disconnected the battery to clear the codes. I checked codes before starting the engine and had "no E Code" I also checked the TPS voltage before starting the engine and it functioned properly or at least it accelerated voltage as the manual calls for (.42 to over 4.0).

***Took for a road test and the E022 is gone but now I have a E026H ?????? Eeerrrrrr <img src="http://forums.aaca.org/images/graemlins/smile.gif" alt="" />

Aw me....Just didn't figure to me....Went back out and disconnected battery again, reset and tried again...NO E CODE <img src="http://forums.aaca.org/images/graemlins/smile.gif" alt="" />. My car/s is/are most definitely of the female gender <img src="http://forums.aaca.org/images/graemlins/frown.gif" alt="" /> <img src="http://forums.aaca.org/images/graemlins/smile.gif" alt="" />

Lets see how long this lasts....

Well, As thought, it did not last long <img src="http://forums.aaca.org/images/graemlins/smile.gif" alt="" />. I drove it (approx 1/2 mile) after resettng the ecm and still had no e codes. Drove it about 5 miles theis evening and yup....E026H again. Idle is up there at 1100 rpm as well. I will get a TPS as F14 and others have been trying to beat in my head.

Replacing the TPS looks like a pain. Have to take off at least the two hoses and then everything is still upside down <img src="http://forums.aaca.org/images/graemlins/frown.gif" alt="" /> errrrrr
