What Was Your First Car?

Good thread!

First car I ever drove was a '63 Dodge Dart GT that belonged to a family friend... I was 14 (1964). First stickshift car I ever drove, I think, was a '60s Dodge pickup with a slant 6 and a 3-on-the-tree at my first job, delivering auto parts. When I first started driving ('67), the family had a '66 Chevy BelAir with a 283 and 'Glide, a '56 Pontiac Star Chief 4-door HT, and a '63 Mercury. In 1970 I bought the Merc from my folks and traded it in on a '68 Pontiac Tempest Custom 2-door HT with a 350-2-bbl and a factory 3-speed Hurst floor shift, should have never sold that car. I also had a '51 M-38 Willys Military Jeep that I had put a Chevrolet 283 in... shoulda kept that one also... A guy I knew, had bought that Pontiac new, I had always told him, hey, if you ever want to sell it... in 1970 the dummy took it and traded it in on a new Monte Carlo... I had to go and buy the Pontiac off the dealer lot... arrgh!!! The Pontiac guy, the Chevy salesman and I were all members of the same volunteer fire department... I would have paid the guy more for the car than the dealer gave him, and it cost me more to buy it from the dealer than it would have from the owner... to this day I get mad about that when I think of it!

Julian... you sold a '70 Cutlass Supreme SX to buy a Mustang Twice??? AAAARRRRRGGGGHHHHH!!!!

My first car to drive was my dad's 1932 Jaguar sedan when I was ten. He stored the car in the garage. It had no motor in it at the time and he was at work or something. I got behind the wheel and rolled it down the driveway "driving" this thing - without interior or motor - into the street! He wasn't pleased when he got home seeing the thing in the street down the road where I got it to stop against someone's railroad ties.

My first actual car was a 1973-or-so Chevy Vega hatchback that drove like a buckbopard wagon. I bought in 1978 for $800. Yes, people DID buy those cars. It was a 3-spd on the floor. I never drove a stick before and when I got to the four-way light by the dealer to enter [NJ] Route 70 I let out the clkutch too quickly and did a 420-degree spinout smack in the middle of the intersection and came to an embarrassing stall, much to the entertainment of the folks at the red light. No one hurt, and no damge to the car during my first 5 minutes' of owning it.

The car lasted me 30 days exactly - it was stolen and reportedly ditched in the Thames River in New London, CT near the Gold Star bridge.

My first car was a '52 Ford that I inherited from my dad. It wasn't really what I wanted in a car. It was a 4 door sedan with the flathead V8 with Fordomatic. It had only 13,000 miles on it in 1960 when I started driving it. It was in excellent condition. Before long I decided to sell it and get a '53 Mercury 2 door hardtop, 3 spd with overdrive. It was a nice car but it had 77,000 miles and this introduced me to the world of car trouble!

The first car I ever drove was a '51 Buick 4door Sedan w/Dynaflow tranny. It belonged to my best friends' Grandad. We were both about 12 or 13 and his Grandad let us drive the car all over the farm. I guess you could say it started my love affair with Buicks. That's why I own a '51 Buick today.

My first car was a 1982 VW Jetta (still have it) but the first cars that I ever drove were a motley mix. I was lucky. By the time I was an early teen I had driven the following;

1)28 Model A Phaeton

2)26 Franklin Boat Tailed Speedster

3)14 Model T

4)05 Queen

5)22 Chandler Royal Dispatch (mine now)

6)10 Metz

7)02 Olds

8)03 Ford Model A (Ford #93)

9)1908 Franklin Barrel Hood

10)early 60's Corvette convertable

11)mid 60's Jeep Truck 4x4

12)mid 70's Volvo

Missed driving THE Adams Farwell by a couple decades. My Grandfather sold it to put his kids through college.

The Chandler, 28 Model A Phaeton and 02 olds are still in the family.

My grandfather was a long time collector in Wauchula Florida. Sold my Chandler in 1922 new in Wauchula and bougt it back in the 1950's.

Cheers

I learned to drive on my mother's 1968 Cadillac Convertible, and then her 1974 Ford Maverick. When I tool my PA driver's test, all of us kids used my aunt's 1970 Plymouth Barracuda since it had power steering and the Maverick did not. Yes, it was my aunt's car. Orange with a black interior. An odd car for a lady back then.

No. only made that mistake ONE TIME.. sold the POS Mustang which was kinda rare. It was 78 King Cobra. but still it wouldnt fall out of a tree and would not hold a candle to the Olds. Thats why I waited and got my current stable. Sold the Mustang 5 yrs later to get my first house..
