Doing Searches

I would like to do more SEARCHES for past posts and threads. Would someone like to tell how they are done and offer any special hints on doing them. I realize that under "Search" there is an Advanced Search drop down box to explain this, but this ignoramous can't even figure that out.

I think it would be a lot of fun to be able to maneauver around the Forum archives.

I have just learned that if you're looking for something in particular like say pedal cars put it in quotes in the search box as "pedal cars" then the search engine will only reply with the specific items in quotes. (thank you sixpack Carl)

Hmmm, 52 views and 0 replys. That implys one of two things to me.

1. No one knows anymore about the subject than I do, or

2. It was such a stupid question no one cares to waste their time to answer.

I'll just assume it was the latter and go try and figure it out on my own.

thanks anyways smirk.giflaugh.gif

edit) if I do figure something out, I'll post what I learned just in case there are some folks that fit into # 1 above wink.gif

Hey Lamar, I too thought you'd get some replys to this. I've already told you all I know about it and that is the method I use so I've probably been one of the ones asking the "stupid questions" that have been answered before that was referred to in another post. So add me to catagory #1. Cheers, Carl

Hello, Mr. Earl...(I fill in here as needed.)

Here is a test case for you:

--Question: Bolt Strength

--Hit Search

--Key Words: Bolt Strength

--Forum: AACA Tech Section

--Newer Than: 0 weeks

--Older than: 1 Day

--Hit Submit

I used to move threads to their proper Forum Topic as best I could keep up with for a good reason: Organization. Also, out of courtesy, always left a note as to where/why a Tech/Misc.Rants/etc., post was moved. That is history as it upset a few, so, you should click on All Forums when asking a Tech Question, or, any question. Beside the AACA area, there are many marque clubs, of which, have buried info now. This could overwhelm you, but, all applicable topics will pop up.

Give it a try. Then, work on defining a "search word".

Regards,

Peter J. <img src="http://forums.aaca.org/images/graemlins/grin.gif" alt="" />

Looking for a red 57 chevy door.

<ul style="list-style-type: disc">[*] "red 57 chevy door" = will return only the words in the quotes, verbatum.

red 57 chevy door = will return any or all of the words in no particular order

+red 57 chevy +door = will return all mentions with both "red" and "door" plus "57" and/or "chevy" instances, if any.

+red 57 chevy -door = will return all mentions with "red", but will exclude any instances of "door", plus display "57" and/or "chevy" instances, if any.

red 57 chev* door = will return all mentions with of "red", "57", "door", and any words that contain "chev" (IE-chevrolet chevy, chevron, cheverini...)

red 57 chevy *door = will return all mentions with of "red", "57", "chevy", and any words that end with "door" (IE-fordoor, tudoor, amadoor etc)

<ul style="list-style-type: disc">[*] + include this word

"?" include exactly this

- exclude this

YOU can also place an "or" or an "and" to say for example, red or black, red and black.

I hope this helps.

Thanks Pedro and John.

Mr. Earl, that's the reason I didn't answer, I was as lost as you. I'd search for something and get so many replies, to the point that I would give up and go back to reading a "comic book" or something. <img src="http://forums.aaca.org/images/graemlins/grin.gif" alt="" /> Looks like we both learned something today. <img src="http://forums.aaca.org/images/graemlins/confused.gif" alt="" /> <img src="http://forums.aaca.org/images/graemlins/smile.gif" alt="" /> Wayne

Thanks Peter. I may be trying to make it more difficult than it actually is. It appears in fact to be rather simple

Yea, I was wondering about what happened to the "Moved to the correct topic". I for one appreciated the effort (which was a lot and at times must have been overwhelming for you)) for its value in doing searches. Thanks for ALL your efforts.

edit) IMO it did help "train" folks and especially newbies as to where subjects "best fit" and got "oldies" in the habit of thinking of where things should go. I'm a stickler for detail and had no problem with your efforts. I think it might serve the same purpose if you were to just do it every once in a while, say one week every three or four months or so. I think if folks do much "searching" at all they would grow to appreciate things being where they should be... Just a thought... smile.gif

Yea, I'll need to be careful that I don't absorb any more learning today, I might overload.

I think a lot more folks than you and I probably learned something... wink.gif

Now where did I put MY comic book?
