'50 Stude convertible

Recommended Posts

This post I'm doing for my uncle. He passed up a 1950 Studebaker convertible at a local swap me for $3000 and is wondering if he should kick his own rearend for doing it. It was very straight and complete (except for motor/trans.) with the top frame but had some minor to moderate rust-thru around the wheelwells and the floors were pretty rough. Interior was there but pretty bad too. Frame looked decent and it was titled. Sat in a barn for 15 years. Any ideas? I know they're rare but obviously don't bring the same attention as say a '57 Chevy. Maybe there's a chance it will show up again so I thought I'd ask. Thanks!

I suppose it depends upon how badly one wants a '50 Stude convertible. Actually, $3,000 sounds a bit high to me - for the condition you describe. But, you could probably get it for a significantly lower amount. Keep in mind that there is actually a lot of difference between a '50 Champ and a '50 Commander convertible. Although the bodies are the same, frames, suspension and drivelines are completely different. And whichever one you pick, keep in mind that the front suspensions are unique to the '50 model year only.

If a Champion, remember that the '50 still uses those four-bolt wheels and hubs, which are prone to cracking (check carefully).

Actually the 50 Commander had a much longer hood and fenders than the Champion. In 51 they shared the shorter sheetmetal.

The front suspension...that year only, hard to find parts.

I would find a place for solemn rest of this car AT MY HOUSE!
