Drive your car

Today was an unusually nice day for January in Texas. I loaded our dog, Suzy in the back seat of our '36 Bentley drop head coupe (convertible) and went for a ride. I'd forgotten what a mervelous thing it is to drive an old car. Suzy enjoyed the ram-air effect you can only get in an open car. Both of us had a great time!

If you get a break in the weather, take your car for a spin. <img src="http://www.aaca.org/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/cool.gif" alt="" />

This past Monday was a holiday, or should I say an official excuse not to work, anyway, I took my 1929 Studebaker President out for a drive. With all the conflicts this past year I had not driven the car since June. The high here in the fog filled Sacramento Valley of California was 48 degrees and misty. It was a great drive except for the woman who pulled out in front of me with out looking. Got to try out the mechanical breaks, they stopped the car with in a few inches of her door. Enjoy your driving, but be careful.

During most of the Annual Meeting in Detroit a couple of weeks ago, it was a "brisk? 11 degrees for the daytime high. I'm afraid that would freeze the dog's snout off in an open car. I won't get into what parts of mine it might freeze off.

Keep faith, spring will eventually arrive.

Mark,

You haven't had that big Studebaker out on our Sacramento roads since June? That's not going to help my campaign to have CALTRANS install HOV (Historic Only Vehicle) lanes on all of our freeways. And the tule fog... it doesn't suit small, six volt tailights very well does it?

I spent the last month rebuilding the water pump on the Auburn and it should be given a nice long test drive, I think. If you're interested, maybe we could schedule an informal caravan to the Napa Valley or somewhere in the foothills like Nevada City when the weather gets a bit better. I know you have some friends with Studebakers in the area... if you don't mind an Auburn in the mix, that is.

Richard,

I am really sorry to have to admit in public that I have not driven my old car since June! My excuse has been the remodeling of our house and yard. With the job still demanding 40 plus hours a week, and the home remodeling, the old car hobby has suffered. The sad fact is that I still have lots of work to do at home, so a weekend drive will be is a well-needed break. I will be attending Turlock this weekend and that is going to kick-start a new old car season. Also, I plan to attend the CCCA Summer Grand Classic that is being held in the California Bay Area this summer. Maybe you and I can hook up and drive over there together?

I think it would be great to an informal weekend tour. I will ask around and see if we can get some others interested. Stay in touch and lets get a weekend set aside.

Chuck, I just had a new muffler system put on the '47 so tomorrow I am driving it to Denver.

It will be good to put him on the road again...I got tired of sounding like an M1 tank. <img src="http://www.aaca.org/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif" alt="" />

I try and drive him at least once a week and if the weather is good, twice or even three times if I can. Since our weather here has been really beautiful, I think it is time for the Dutchman to head out on the open road! Always a great joy for me.

Mark,

I hadn't thought much about the Summer Grand Classic. But I haven't been to one before so it might be interesting to caravan over there. Ted Raines lives up the road from me and I think he sometimes goes to CCCA events so I'll check with Ted next time I see him to see if he is planning on driving one of his Caddys or the LaSalle there. Maybe we could get a little squadron of classics out on the road.

I mentioned a little informal day trip to my wife and she thought it would be fun so if we can get something planned for a Saturday or Sunday I'll be there.
