Jim
From my experience the motors don't go bad that often. Usually it is the regulator that strips the teeth. The motor is riveted to the regulator. I do have good used motor/regulators available and I always guarantee my parts. I can be reached at jfinn@cpinternet.com
sahein
In every instance I have found that the plastic gear inside of the motor has lost a tooth or two. Replacing the motor with a new one should repair the problem. I have never found a problem with the regulator, only the motors.
Guest DTerry
Recently replaced a motor. $45 at Autozone with lifetime warranty. Sure 'nuff, a couple of teeth missing on one of the plastic gears inside. (I had to take it apart to see what was inside.) If you replace the motor, be darn sure you lock the regulator before you separate them.
farnelle
DTerry can you explain your comments about locking the regulator? I am getting ready to change out the motor on my 90 convertible. It works like Padgett says, up a little, stop, wait, up a little until it finally gets to the top. Thanks to all you guys for the information. This is really a great site. harry yarnell
The regulator is spring loaded, and will chop a finger in a moment if not secured. There is (I think) two holes in the belcrank that you can insert a nut and bolt to hold the two together, or you can drill a hole in the two pieces, and bolt temperarly. Guest DTerry
I drilled a ¼? hole through the regulator and housing and secured it with a bolt through both. THIS IS THE MOST IMPORTANT STEP IN THE PROCESS. THERE IS A B.A. SPRING ON THE REGULATOR GEAR THAT WILL REMOVE BODY PARTS, AND IT ABSOLUTELY MUST BE FASTENED. Drill out the three 1/8? rivets and the motor falls off. Assuming that you already have the motor ? AutoZone $45 with lifetime warranty ? attach the new motor with 1/8? (I think) rivets. If you want detailed instructions, I can furnish them here or by private message - it's pretty long, and I don't want to take up the whole post - unless someone else wants to share in my experience.
