electric fan

Well- do you plan to keep the original clutch fan? That will determine if you get a puller or pusher fan.

I'd get a double fan and wire it up to start in sequence. One fan running any time the ignition is on, and the second controlled by an adjustable thermostat or the A/C switch. Use a relay in any case so it runs off the battery and not thru existing 37 year old wiring. No need for a toasted Toro.

All things considered, if the car has overheating issues (and most early Toro do) an electric fan is only a stopgap measure. There's other things that need to be checked- ignition timing, radiator shrouds and seals, underbody seals and air dams, condition of radiator. Even the wrong waterpump impeller will make them run hot and I can almost guarantee it's wrong if the car's ever had a jobber rebuilt water pump installed. Now, if you're trying to free up some horsepower...

It's some of both. The car doesn't actually overheat. I just drove it 30 miles on the interstate and then got off and got into traffic and the temp. gauge jumped. That's when the whole idea came up. It also does it if I sit in traffic for a while or I'm in a parade.

Yes, I am planning on keeping it as original as I possibly can. I wouldn't mind freeing up some extra horsepower. Don't mind those bragging rights. <img src="http://www.aaca.org/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif" alt="" />

I think most of the wiring was replaced when the car was restored, so it isn't 37 years, but I'm not sure when that was done so the relay would probably be the way to go anyway. Thanks.

Mark, does this car have A/C? It should have a thermostatic vacuum switch in the bypass hose if it does. It switches distributor vacuum from ported to manifold if coolant temp goes high (above 230 degrees) at idle. It or the vacuum advance unit itself may not be working.

Later engines had the DTVS in the intake coolant crossover passage.

yes, the car has AC. but, it doesn't even do it all the time, i can drive the car pretty hard all day some days without a problem, but then the one day i drove it about 10 miles and then sat in line for 10 min. to get into a car show and by the time i parked it was running hot. i'll check the switch and the vacuum unit though.

i would still like to get more air moving into the car though. it kinda worries me with how hot it gets after only driving it a little. plus, as i said before, wouldn't mind the extra power.
