In reality some lawmen, of the 30's especially, preferred the BAR (Browning Automatic Rifle) over the Thompson Sub-Machine gun.  The .30 cal. ammo for the BAR had much more power and penetration abilities compared to the .45 cal. pistol cartridge of the "Chicago Typewriter".  Frank Hammer of Bonny & Clyde fame for one.
