Will, as far as I know they weren't painted at all. I really don't know about a 53, but my 55 wasn't. And my 62 isn't painted....

thanks skyking and willie.

i think i'll do the cast iron color.

while i'm on this note. what do you think about the engine? the valve covers were buick green. but that's all i could tell. and it was hard to tell as i soaked them in purple power and scraped them. but i could see a faint buick green color underneath the grease. the engine is now at a pro shop being boiled and rebuilt but it will be soon time to protect it. i've already got a can of buick green from eastwood. was buick green stock on some models or just and option?

thanks again in advance!

Will,

I had the same questions when I restored my 1955 Roadmaster. The engine is

Buick Engine Green, available from Cars, Inc. in NJ.

The Dynaflow to the best of my knowledge was not painted. After careful striping

and cleaning, the color of the case is a light to medium grey.

It is possible that over the years, perhaps when rebuilt, the transmissions were

painted by the rebuilders.

This correct paint color is available from Eastwood Company, and called "Detail Grey".

Send for their catalog, there is a lot of cool paints and supplies you can use.

800-345-1178 or www eastwoodcompany.com.

I especialy like their underhood black paint, which is the absolute correct

sheen of not flat, not gloss, but just slightly glossy. It is a laquer paint,

that is extreemly easy to use either in an aerosol, or sprayed with a gun.

See my engine and cars in the photo gallery.
