Wogden
I have a 57 Olds standard trans apart for repair and would like to replace the bushing for the tail shaft in the rear housing. The casting number on the ext housing is 1173968-1 Can someone give me the GM part number for this bushing. Thanks
rocketraider
I can't find a separate part # for a bushing in my Oct 64 dated chassis parts book, which ought to be close enough to cover 1957. 4.408 is the group for bearings and bushings and it cuts off at 1956. 4.317 shows 57-60 synchromesh extension housing as p/n 1173969 and notes "w/bushing". Makes one wonder if that bushing was even serviced separately.
Wogden
Thanks Glenn for looking that up. I have a 56 shop manual and it shows a special tool J-1450-4 and J-1450-5 to remove and to install a new bushing, The 57 bushing is larger as the shaft is quite stout as compared to the 56 and earlier units so I doubt it would work. Perhaps GM wanted one to replace the entire assembly? This trans jumps out of 2nd on coasting. Other than that, it works fine and the gears all look good. I have a NOS synchro and 2nd gear on its way but would like to have been able to replace that bushing.
NailheadBob
I will contact a friend who has a 1957 Oldsmobile, but his is automatic, and see if he has any thoughts, he is also in the Oldsmobile club. I remember seeing an article on the "Specialist" on 1957 Oldsmobiles ( I thing he was a tech advisor in Olds club) and lived in southeast Wisconsin ( Racine area?)
