There are 2 flat pieces of steel 1/8"x3/4"x1 1/8" spot welded to the backside of the dash for both L&R towers, each has a hole for a threaded machine screw. This may be an early production car(frame #2882), all the rest of the wiper towers i have, are similar to the ones posted, except no bosses.

How do the wiper arms attach to those? Do those have some kind of adapter attached or is the shaft you see sticking out all one piece?

 

I know in 1936 there was a mid year change from arms that squeeze/clamp around the shaft in early 30s fashion (for early 36) to a tapered shaft with a threaded end (late 36). I believe this also applies to Buick. The transmissions are identical except for the end of the shaft. The late 36 transmissions and arms are half year only(!). It is really surprising to me to find out that 35 is probably different from early 36 as well.

All the ones i have are the "wire" type wiper arms, shaft has a hole for wiper arm. The end of the wire shaft slips thru the hole and base/cover is spring loaded to pull backwards and cover the connection. I`m updating.. Trico makes a conversion hub to update to `40s style splined adjustable wiper arms. My `36 Buick 40 series has the wire type, and a friend with the same car as mine, his wiper towers have the splined shaft with a nut, which takes a different type of wiper arm, this is the change you mention. Another wiper transmission that looks similar but different, is `36 Chevy looks the same, but tower head and arm to vac. motor, are one piece, and there is another (fragile) piece to sandwich the two in place. Robert Bryan, fellow AACA member and Trico specialist, i recently bought the `36 Chevy backup piece and the conversion hubs.

Thank you for the pictures.

 I have some of the pieces for this type of housing and molds for the gears.  The housings that I have are all the 1936 models.  Here is a picture of the small retainers used on most 1936 GM cars.
