EmTee
I have the rear diff cover removed and both backing plates stripped-down. I removed the screw/pin that retains the side (spider) gear shaft. I pulled the shaft out about half way, just to see that I could. At that point I noticed that in addition to the spacer block that separates the axle shafts, there is a steel spacer collar between the block and each side gear (which I originally thought was part of the gear). Before I commit to pulling the side gear shaft, I thought I'd ask here first to see whether there are any tips or precautions, since the shop manual doesn't go into detail. Will the gears themselves stay put when I remove the block and spacers if I don't disturb anything? I will maintain the original block and spacer orientations. Thanks! DonMicheletti
The spider gears can fall out, but are no problem to get back in properly (they have always fallen out on me) 1
EmTee
Thanks, Don - I'll plan to just remove the side gears, spacers and the block. I will keep the pieces in their original orientation with respect to each other for reinstallation.
