It can lead to problems down the line. The 2 speed trans is P R N D L (5 positions) The 3 speed trans is P R N D D L (6 positions) Rarely is the steering column changed (which adds the correct detentes) So when you put the lever into the single "D" position of the 2 speed column, you are not really in either (or maybe both) of the "D-D" positions of the valve body in the 3 speed transmission. (the D1 and D2 positions start out in EITHER first OR second gear) This affects which band/clutches are applied and because you are not really in one or the other, increases the wear on them. Of course the results of this wear may not be experience for a while and later on nobody can figure out why the 3 speed transmissions keep going bad.
