Up for auction today is a stunning example of the iconic 61 Chrysler.  From the push-button transmission to the huge fins and canted headlights, this car is a crowd-pleaser where ever it goes.  This particular car was a California original, and the black plates will go with the sale.  Has most all paperwork and registrations since the car was new. The owner's manual is still in the sealed plastic.  The original set of keys appear to be unused as well.

The car went through a complete cosmetic restoration. The chrome was redone when it was painted.  The seats and carpet were refinished as well.  It has a new electroluminescent unit for the dash lights.  Some of the mechanical work that was done includes an NOS power brake booster, A/C converted and working, new tires, new battery, new freeze plugs, full tune-up, etc... well over 15K was invested in this beautiful beast, not counting the cost of the car. Mileage is original!

It absolutely floats down the highway at 70+ MPH.  Gas mileage is pretty decent - I've gotten over 18 mpg on the highway.  Parking brake holds the car very well.  I hate to part with this one, but I just moved to Washington State from Nevada and I don't think it's going to survive the salt water air.  This car has never had rust, and I hate to see it start because of the area I'm in.

A very “unusual” mix of styling to say the least.  Vert typical of Chrysler design at that point in time.  Those dash AC vents look so out of place, who would ever think of using something like that.  Overall the car seems in decent shape, just not sure the asking price matches market interest.

Nice looking paint and interior from what I can see in the photos. Can't really speak about the price, as I'm not familiar with these cars in this condition, but I'll take Terry's word for it. Four doors and sedan configuration should be good for a discount.

 

Having said that, some of the eBay Mopars I was just looking at make this vehicle look like the bargain of the century. EBay is LOADED with 60's Roadrunners for 60k, 70k 80k dollars (and more) and NONE of them sell at that price, at least for the time being. Some big fin late 1950's Exner cars in the 50 - 60k range, and they aren't selling either.

The Newport is a lower cost Chrysler model, parts can be tricky to find as there are fewer MoPar parts vendors for all of those unique Chrysler engineering designs than Chevy or Ford, but the real limiting factor is the MoPar customer is typically “thrifty” to put it nicely.  I was a MoPar parts vendor and experienced that thrifty mentality quite often😀.

This '61 Newport sedan is one of those anomalies one runs across from those years: the entry-level model loaded with options.  The Newport sedan was fob $2,964, to that was ordered: TorqueFlite: $227; air conditioning $510; power steering $108; power brakes: $44; heater: $102; radio: $100; tinted glass: $43.  This from what is visible in the photos, prices quoted from The Standard Catalog of American Cars 1946-1975, 3rd Edition, Edited by John Gunnell.  Nearly $4.100 without whatever other options were specified, destination and taxes, etc.  Hope the original purchaser enjoyed it.

I chose not to install it since the dash always cracks where the mirror is.

Engine has all new freeze plugs, A/C service, new brakes, new OEM power booster, new battery, belts and hoses, tuned, oil changed, and is ready for the road. You can barely feel the transmission shift gears, and the engine is quiet as a mouse. I spent a ton of money on the restoration, and have all receipts, plus a whole folder of receipts from the previous owner. The original keys look like they were never used, and the owner's manual is still in the plastic. Comes with lots of parts too, like gauges, headlight switches, bunch of other stuff. I had the original electroluminescent box rebuilt. Dash lights are working nicely. Radio does not work. Previous owner had a stereo under the dash. It's gone, but I never hooked the radio back up. He did say it worked perfectly, but I can't guarantee that.

You won't be disappointed. I can't enjoy it because of where I live, so it's just sitting in the garage.
