Hans1965
Hi guys, Yesterday I wanted to replace the motor mounts and tranny mount/thrust pad on my 49 Super convertible. As the dynaflow of my car is leaking like crazy we pulled the rear axle and checked the torque ball. Did that for the very first time. There is apparently a part broken of that was causing monster scratches all over the surfaces. Look at the center of the torque ball, please, even there it looks bad. I had bought from Bob's the replacement thing with the rubber lip, but from what I believe the torque ball is just trash. Can you give me some advice, please? Is that saveable? Where could I get a replacement if not? Bob's and cars only offer the outer ring with vulcanized rubber seal, but not the whole thing. The thrust pad was totally shot as is the tranny mount, motor mounts were broken, too, and motor was at least 2 inches too far on the passenger side. Thank you!!! avgwarhawk
Mine look similar but not as bad. Others may chime in here but I see no reason the very rough areas could be smoothed with some sanding. Very large gouges in the metal fill with JB Weld or if you can, weld in a bit of metal and sand smooth. These torque balls assemblies are very tough. I suggest you replace the brass bushing while you have it appears. When you reassemble put a light coat of grease where the two pieces meet and some scratching of the surfaces are occurring.
