Restoring a 29 Model M

[color:"blue"] Working from the ground up. What is the correct engine color for the vertical 8 for 1929? Is a different color used for bolt-on accessories? Is it true that some cam covers are painted pressed steel and some are polished aluminum? Mine is steel.

All 8 cylinder blocks were painted a light gray and all accessories were black. On the SV engines, the aluminum cover was used up to engine number 85502. After that, they were stamped steel painted black. Engine 85502 would have been around early to mid-1927.

I respectfully disagree with you. You are right that the 1926 & 1927 engines were grey. I'm not sure about 1928, but I am positive that 1929 engines were dark green, and 1930 engines were black. I have an all original 1930 M in my garage that has never had the engine apart in the past, and it is black. I believe in 1931 they went back to green til the end of the line. All DV32 engines were dark green, and I assume they used the same paint in SV engines too.

Actually my car is titled as a 1929, but most of the parts on it make it a 1930.

StutzNutz is correct that later years were not gray. I apologize for not verifying my source before opening my mouth and consequently providing incorrect information. I have checked with Ernie Toth who says the following information is available in the appropriate small (3" X 6") booklets that Stutz published for each year that gives color combinations, upholstery, etc.

Engine blocks are painted as follows:

1926-1928 Gray

1929-1930 (Model M) Black

1931-end (SV & DV) Dark Green

Good work Steve. I'll apologize for mis-stating that 1929's were green. I know I have seen several restored 1929's painted green though (that's where I got the idea from) They must have been wrong.

Here are some more photos. The lights in the storage area of the shop are not great. I was working on another project, so I couldn't push it outside. Let me know of you can use any detail photos. The engine if from a convertible coupe. 1928?
