Old26Buick
I converted my 48 Ford to 12 volt and left the 6 volt starter in. It has been making an awful noise. It even started to chip the ring gear. Talked to my starter guy. He used a field coil out of a 56 (12 volt) Ford starter. Sure turns slower and makes no noise. Old26Buick
Went to my starter rebuilder. He took a 56 Field coil (12 volt) and put in my 6 volt 48 Ford starter. Works great doesn't turn over as fast as the 6 volt starter running on 12 volt. With the 6 volt starter running too fast it had chipped a couple teeth on ring gear. 19tom40
Are you worried about the chipped teeth? They will get worse and eventually you will have to replace the ring gear. If it was my car, I would leave it alone until it was time to replace the clutch or the starter just spins without cranking the engine. Then I would pull the engine and replace the clutch and ring gear.
