Was there ever a nailhead (264,322,364,401,425) with a BOP pattern tranny?

I have been having a heated debate with a fellow Buick fan who is under the belief that the late 1965 and 1966 401/425 used the later BOP bellhousing design. This would mean that you could bolt a 200R4 from an 80's Firebird or Cutless or any other Buick, Olds, Pontiac. <P>I just wanted your opinion, I can't find anything on the net to send him that would say otherwise. <P>Also, what years did the ST400 have a variable pitch torque converter?<P>I am not talking about the 215, 231,300,340.... only the nailhead motor. <P>------------------<BR>buickfam@aol.com<BR>Life long Buick Fan.<BR>1965 Skylark H/T<BR>1965 Gran Sport Convertible<BR>1948 Chevy Pickup with 401 Buick.<BR>"Fan of anything that moves human beings"

I have used an adapter built by Kennedy Engineered Products out of Palmdale,Ca (805-272-1147) to conected a 215 to BOP (th 350) in a MG TD kit car. It's a very nice unit and has worked trouble free for many years. I don't know if they also make one for the nailheads. We use a lot of their units for 215 and BOP to VW for sand rails. If they make it it's GOOD stuff. Wow a nailhead with an overdrive trans, could do wonders for an old Riv. hope this helps. JIM

I have a number of 401-425 '65-6 nailhead and ST400 setups and they are all the rounded bellhousing type. Those with the 'ears' came with the new 400/430 in '67. I think that the switch pitch went away in '68 or '69-Dan

Both my ST400's retrieved from '66 Wildcats are earless (& fearless I hope!) rounded traditional nailhead style bellhousings. Perhaps the GS Riv's &/or GS Skylarks were the exception??

They were all round, I have a 3 '56 engines, a '64, a bunch of '66s and one unknown year, they are all round!<P>------------------<BR>Roberta<BR>BCA TREASURER 2000-2001<BR>BCA PRESIDENT 1998-2000<BR>BCA VICE PRESIDENT 1997-1998<BR>WEBMASTER<BR>Director-Michigan Chapter- Gran Sport Club of America 1989-Present<BR>http://www.geocities.com/buickracer<BR>1956 Special 2 door Sedan<BR>1966 Wildcats<BR>1968 GS-400 Convertible 4-speed<BR>1970 GSX Stage 1<BR>1970 Skylark Racecar - 11.26, 118 MPH, 7/22/00<BR>1986 GN, 4800 miles

Now I am curious. The 65 and 66 GS cars were obviously nailheads, but they had ST300 transmissions, right? The ST300 I pulled from the Special Wagon has ears, and would have bolted right up to the 455 I put in the car. So that makes the GS ST300 transmissions a special for GS item, right???<BR>Thanks, Brian! More trivia! Is the Cadillac bellhousing the same as BOP? The Fleetwood has a switch pitch! ('66)<P>------------------<BR>Ted Nagel<BR>65 WildcatConvSuperWcat<BR>65 WildcatAutoSuperWcat<BR>65 Wildcat4spdSuperWcat<BR>65 Riviera Wildcat 445<BR>65 Special Wagon 455<BR>70 GS Stage1 4speed<BR>66 Fleetwood Brougham?

I pose this question "open ended" because I know the answer I just wanted it to be non-biased. <P>Wildcat65, The Cad used a Nailhead ST300 with an adapter in '64 as did Aston Martin, Rolls Royce, and Ferrari (I believe) for may years into the 70's. The St300 used behind the 401 in Gran Sports used a NAILHEAD ONLY ST300(though they may have used the ST400 elsewhere I don't think so). <BR>The Gran Sport in '65 and 66 had a TON of Gran Sport only stuff, how they made money on that car is beside me! <P>RLbleeker, that is a Skylark with a 300CID in Hot Rod. <P>I'm looking for evidence I am right as well as Proof that I am wrong. <P>How about the variable pitch converter ST400 was it used in '64 or '65 or 66? <P>------------------<BR>buickfam@aol.com<BR>Life long Buick Fan.<BR>1965 Skylark H/T<BR>1965 Gran Sport Convertible<BR>1948 Chevy Pickup with 401 Buick.<BR>"Fan of anything that moves human beings"<p>[This message has been edited by MARTINSR (edited 12-04-2000).]

I could be wrong, but it seems like I read in HotRod that the '66 nailhead was a one year moter and used the BOP pattern. They were doing a build of a 401 that they pulled from a '66 Skylark GS. Could be wrong though, I'll have to find it now.

I found the article I was thinking of. It was actually Rod & Custom, and it states that they are all the same from '57 to '66. I thought there was something strange about the '66 GS, but obviously it was the ST300 not the engine.
